Champions League match reviews: 20 October 2026 to 21 October 2026

Como led Manchester United after 118 seconds and won 4-1. Nico Paz scored twice, Tasos Douvikas and Jacobo Ramón added the others, and Joshua Zirkzee scored United's only goal in stoppage time.

Matchday three of the league phase, played on Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 October, produced seventy-four goals in eighteen games: eleven home wins, four away wins and three draws, with two dismissals, three own goals and five penalties scored. Paris Saint-Germain beat Barcelona 4-2 by scoring twice between the 81st and 86th minutes, which ended Barcelona's unbeaten start, and Manchester City beat AEK Athens 5-1 with a Phil Foden hat-trick. Liverpool came from two goals down to beat Villarreal 4-3, Napoli beat Bodo/Glimt by the same score, Real Madrid beat RB Leipzig 4-1 and Aston Villa beat Viking 3-1. Arsenal drew 2-2 at Bayern Munich having lost Bukayo Saka to injury after ten minutes, Inter Milan beat Shakhtar Donetsk with ten men, and Galatasaray at Lille and LASK at Sporting each won for the first time in this season's Champions League.

Every game is reviewed below, the marquee games at length and the rest more briefly, each with its timeline and numbers. The full table sits further down with the qualification bands marked; after three matchdays it rests on goal difference and goals scored as much as on points, so no club's position is read into the prose. The matchday four fixtures, on 3 and 4 November, close the piece.

Liverpool4-3Villarreal

Liverpool trail by two goals after 29 minutes and win 4-3, with two goals from Alexis Mac Allister and two assists from Rio Ngumoha

Liverpool were two goals down inside half an hour. Virgil van Dijk's header back to his goalkeeper had too little on it, Georges Mikautadze nipped in and a left-footed finish put Villarreal ahead on 4. A straight ball from Villarreal's Nathan Saliba through the middle of Liverpool's defence then let Sergi Cardona slot past Alisson on 29, which sent the 700 travelling supporters wild. Andoni Iraola had made six changes from Saturday's win at Brentford, and Alexander Isak, Bradley Barcola and Florian Wirtz were among those left on the bench.

Alexis Mac Allister headed in Kostas Tsimikas's corner on 36, and Rio Ngumoha, 18, dinked a ball for Ronald Araujo to level in the second minute of first-half stoppage time. Araujo went off at the break for Wirtz, Ryan Gravenberch dropped into the right-back slot, and the home side looked a different team. Ngumoha went past Cardona to set up Mac Allister's tap-in on 65, the first time Liverpool had been in front, and Wirtz, scoring for his club for the first time this season, extended the lead to two goals with a left-footed finish on 68, from Cody Gakpo's pass. Tani Oluwaseyi pulled one back for Villarreal on 87 from Ayoze Pérez's ball, and Liverpool held on.

Liverpool had 22 shots to 14, seven on target to five and eight corners to two, and Ngumoha had provided two of the four goals. It was three wins from three in Europe, though not an evening that made any of it look easy. Liverpool go to Fenerbahçe on 4 November, kick-off 17:45, and Villarreal entertain Paris Saint-Germain a night earlier.

Manchester City5-1AEK Athens

Phil Foden scores a hat-trick and sets up another as Manchester City beat AEK Athens 5-1, with Rico Lewis providing two assists

Manchester City needed an answer to the 4-2 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain a week earlier, and they started to give it when Enzo Fernández's free-kick came back off the crossbar and Elliot Anderson was first to the rebound, poking it in on 12. Allan hit the woodwork soon afterwards. Phil Foden then collected Rico Lewis's pass and arrowed a shot high into the net on 34, and City led 2-0 at half-time against opponents who had barely threatened.

Stavros Pilios scored on 52 with a composed finish, AEK's first shot on target, and City answered within five minutes: Foden set up Rayan Cherki, who stroked home on 57. Foden struck first time into the top corner from another Lewis pass on 65 and completed his hat-trick from close range on 76, from a pinpoint cross by Ryan McAidoo, a substitute. Erling Haaland did not leave the bench.

City had 63.7 per cent of the ball, 17 shots to 11 and seven on target to three, and Foden finished with three goals and an assist, Lewis with two assists. City are at Aston Villa in the league on Saturday (12:30), and they go to RB Leipzig on 4 November, kick-off 20:00; AEK host Real Madrid earlier that day (17:45).

Paris Saint-Germain4-2Barcelona

Paris Saint-Germain score twice between the 81st and 86th minutes to beat Barcelona 4-2 and end Barcelona's 11-match unbeaten start

Paris Saint-Germain, the holders, set out to press Barcelona into mistakes and were close to scoring at once: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia hit the foot of the post after 79 seconds, and Joan García then denied Desire Doué and Ousmane Dembélé after high turnovers. Dembélé went off injured and Ferran Torres replaced him on 20. Doué, who had been the star against Manchester City a week earlier, carried the ball to the edge of the box after PSG intercepted a Barcelona ball out from defence and finished low into the bottom left corner on 38, from João Neves's pass.

Xavi Espart, 19, burst into the box and beat Matvey Safonov at his near post on 55, ten minutes after the restart, and Barcelona looked the likelier winners until PSG's Torres hit the post on a counter and Lucas Hernández headed in a corner on 72. Lamine Yamal turned Warren Zaïre-Emery and squeezed a shot between Safonov and the post to make it 2-2 on 79. Vitinha controlled a clearance on his chest and volleyed into the bottom corner on 81, and Fabián Ruiz settled it on 86, meeting Achraf Hakimi's low centre at the far post.

PSG had 14 shots on target from 22 against Barcelona's five from 18, and 46.9 per cent of the ball. The result ended an 11-match unbeaten start for Barcelona. PSG have nine points, Barcelona six. PSG go to Villarreal on 3 November, kick-off 20:00, and Barcelona entertain Aston Villa at the same hour.

Stuttgart1-1Atletico Madrid

Julian Alvarez equalises 80 seconds after half-time and ten-man Atletico Madrid hold on for a 1-1 draw at Stuttgart

Stuttgart, who had won their first two games, dominated the first half and had to wait until the 36th minute to lead. Jamie Leweling's low strike from the edge of the area was a deserved advantage at the interval, and they were made to rue the chances they had missed.

Atletico were level 80 seconds after the restart. Ademola Lookman, on at the break, found Julian Alvarez unmarked in the area and Alvarez swept in a finish, his first goal of the season, after a summer in which Barcelona tried to sign him and Atletico refused to sell. Morten Hjulmand was sent off on 64 after a reckless tackle on Angelo Stiller, and Atletico played the rest of the game with ten men. Stuttgart put them under pressure without a winner, their best chance falling to Jeff Chabot, who headed wide from Maximilian Mittelstädt's corner.

Stuttgart had 54.1 per cent of the ball, 18 shots to ten, five on target to three and nine corners to four. Atletico have four points from three games, Stuttgart seven. Stuttgart travel to Galatasaray on 3 November (17:45), and Atletico host Bayern Munich later that night (20:00).

Como4-1Manchester United

Como score after 118 seconds, lead at half-time and win 4-1, with Nico Paz scoring twice and Manchester United's only goal coming in stoppage time

Como were ahead after 118 seconds, and the rest of the night was a long confirmation of it. Nico Paz opened the scoring from Lucas da Cunha's pass, the first of his two, eight days after Manchester United had conceded inside a minute at Atletico Madrid, which made them the first English side to concede inside two minutes in successive major European games. United were a goal down at the interval, when Michael Carrick replaced Matheus Cunha and Andrey Santos, the latter booked on 25.

The changes were three minutes old when Paz set up Tasos Douvikas for the second on 49. Paz scored his own second on 57, and Kaiki provided the assist for Jacobo Ramón's header on 76, which made it four. For a stretch it looked as though United might match their heaviest European defeat, the 5-0 loss to Sporting in 1964. Bruno Fernandes made way for Joshua Zirkzee on 67, and Zirkzee, who beat the offside trap to meet Amad Diallo's cross, scored in the first minute of stoppage time, which improved nothing.

Como had 55 per cent of the ball and one corner to United's four, and United had more shots, 13 to 11, but Como had eight on target to four. In 2008, the last time United won the Champions League, Como were in Serie D. Carrick went to the travelling supporters at the end and held up his hands in apology more than once, and he appeared to pay his own players no attention as he did. On Match of the Day, Nedum Onuoha called it "a huge issue" that Carrick and Fernandes were "clashing with their messaging" after such a tough defeat, and Stephen Warnock said United "didn't know how to press, when to press". United host Roma on 3 November, kick-off 20:00, and Como visit Lens the following night.

Aston Villa3-1Viking

Aston Villa lead 2-0 at half-time, add an own goal and win 3-1 for a third victory in three league-phase games

Unai Emery's side had the upper hand from the first whistle, and Viking, who held Bayern Munich to a draw a round earlier, defended nervously until Ross Barkley converted Ibrahim Mbaye's corner at the near post on 23. The second came on 37, when Emiliano Buendía scored from the penalty spot after Zlatko Tripić brought down Alysson, a penalty awarded after a VAR review.

Viking pushed forward more after the restart, and it cost them a third. Alysson, who had already won the penalty, delivered a cross that Henrik Heggheim turned into his own net on 62. Alejandro Garnacho, on as a substitute on 72, almost scored and was denied by a save from Viking goalkeeper Østbø. Peter Christiansen's acrobatic finish on 84, given by VAR after an initial offside decision, took the shine off the clean sheet and nothing more.

Villa had 21 shots to ten, ten on target to three, and 54.5 per cent of the ball. It was their third win from three, after the 6-0 against Fenerbahçe, and their twelfth major European home win in a row, a run that ties the longest by an English club this century, which Manchester City managed between 2022 and 2024 and Manchester United between 2006 and 2008. Viking have still not won any of their 25 major European away games, 21 defeats and four draws. Villa go to Barcelona on 3 November, kick-off 20:00, and Viking host Sabah the next night.

The own goal on 62 was scored by Viking's Henrik Heggheim and is listed under Aston Villa, the side it benefited.

Bayern Munich2-2Arsenal

Arsenal lose Bukayo Saka after ten minutes, trail to a Harry Kane penalty and draw 2-2 through Declan Rice on 82

Arsenal lost Bukayo Saka after ten minutes and found a goal anyway. Saka went down with what looked like a thigh problem as he tried to play a pass with nobody near him, and Eberechi Eze, his replacement, scored the opener on 25 from Martin Ødegaard's pass after VAR intervened over an initial offside flag. Harry Kane, whose passing kept catching the eye, picked up the ball in midfield and split the Arsenal back line for Alphonso Davies to equalise on 35.

Kane then put Bayern ahead from the penalty spot on 61, sending David Raya the wrong way after his shot hit the hand of Jurrien Timber inside the box. Bayern pressed for a third and Arsenal held, until Declan Rice swapped passes with Viktor Gyökeres, a substitute on 68, and finished low into the corner on 82. Timber forced an acrobatic save from Manuel Neuer before the end.

Arsenal had 54.1 per cent of the ball, 14 shots to 13, five on target each and five corners to three. Kane scored in a tenth successive Champions League appearance, which makes him only the second player to score in ten in a row in the competition, after Cristiano Ronaldo, who managed eleven, and it was his 16th goal against Arsenal across all competitions. Speaking on Match of the Day, Nedum Onuoha said it was "a big blow" for Arsenal to lose Saka "possibly for a prolonged period of time", because "the best version of them always features him on the right-hand side". Arsenal go to Slavia Prague on 4 November, kick-off 20:00, and Bayern visit Atletico Madrid the night before.

Inter Milan1-0Shakhtar Donetsk

Inter Milan lose Alessandro Bastoni to a second yellow card on 68 minutes and beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 through Carlos Augusto on 77

Inter Milan arrived having lost four Champions League games in a row, the first two of this season among them, and having won one of their previous eight in the competition. The Italian champions, beaten finalists in 2023 and 2025, were level at half-time, and on 68 Alessandro Bastoni was sent off for a second yellow card, the two bookings coming within three minutes.

Nine minutes later they scored. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, on the pitch for less than two minutes, lofted a pass to find Carlos Augusto, who forced the ball past the advancing Dmytro Riznyk on 77. Mkhitaryan later had a one-on-one chance to make it safe, but checked back and fired into the side netting.

Inter had 45.1 per cent of the ball, 13 shots to 12, five on target to four and five corners to four. Shakhtar, who have four points from three games, host Sporting at Stamford Bridge on 3 November (17:45), and Inter go to Feyenoord later that night (20:00).

Real Madrid4-1RB Leipzig

Real Madrid lead through Bernardo Silva two minutes before half-time and beat RB Leipzig 4-1, with Yan Diomande scoring against his former club

RB Leipzig looked the more threatening side for most of the first half, and Thibaut Courtois denied Christopher Nkunku and Rômulo to keep it goalless. Real Madrid went ahead two minutes before the interval, Bernardo Silva scoring his first goal for the club from close range after Arda Güler's shot took a deflection off a defender and rolled through the legs of Maarten Vandevoordt.

The second came on 52, when Güler tapped in after Kylian Mbappé's header crossed the face of goal, by which time Vandevoordt had tipped a fierce Federico Valverde effort past the post. Mbappé, who had earlier put a shot into the side netting after Jude Bellingham pulled the ball back, scored his own on 83, a curled shot into the corner from the edge of the box, his 12th in 12 games this season, with Yan Diomande providing the pass. Tidiam Gomis pulled one back for Leipzig on 85, and two minutes later Diomande, the £120m summer signing who had left Leipzig in the summer, rifled in a volley from outside the area.

Real had 64.4 per cent of the ball, 18 shots to 11 and 11 on target to six. Real face Barcelona in the season's first Clásico on Sunday 25 October (20:00 GMT) and go to AEK Athens on 4 November (17:45); Leipzig, hosts to Manchester City, play later that evening (20:00).

Napoli4-3Bodø / Glimt

Scott McTominay scores twice and Napoli beat Bodo/Glimt 4-3, with an own goal on 88 and a Sondre Fet goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time

Napoli had begun with defeats by Arsenal and Villarreal, had won only three matches in all competitions this season, and led after 54 seconds when Matteo Politano volleyed in Spinazzola's pass. Jens Petter Hauge levelled on 27 at the end of an incisive Bodo/Glimt attack, and Scott McTominay, running on to a through-ball from Kevin De Bruyne, dinked past Nikita Haikin on 41. Andreas Helmersen's hard shot into the bottom corner brought Bodo/Glimt level again on 62, McTominay headed his second on 75, with Politano the provider, and Odin Bjørtuft turned a Giovane cross into his own net on 88, which looked like the cushion Napoli needed.

Sondre Fet, who had made both of Bodo/Glimt's earlier goals, headed in a third in the fourth minute of stoppage time, after an effort from Bjørtuft had hit the bar. They were McTominay's first goals of the season; he was out for four games last month following surgery for a benign heart arrhythmia. Napoli had 43.2 per cent of the ball, 17 shots to 15 and eight on target to six. Bodo/Glimt, who had beaten Borussia Dortmund 1-0 a week earlier, could not find a way back in Naples. Napoli go to Porto on 4 November, kick-off 20:00, and Bodo/Glimt host Lille the night before.

The own goal on 88 was scored by Bodo/Glimt's Odin Bjørtuft and is listed under Napoli, the side it benefited.

Sporting CP2-3LASK

LASK come from behind to win 3-2 at Sporting and take their first Champions League victory, ending Sporting's perfect start

Sporting had won their first two games and were ahead after five minutes, when Luis Suárez scored a penalty awarded for a trip on Nestory Irankunda, but Christoph Lang equalised on 15, taking a touch on the edge of the area and drilling across the goalkeeper into the far corner. LASK, who had lost eight in a row away from home in major European competition, were the clinical side after the break: Sasa Kalajdžić found the far corner on 63 from a counter-attack, and Krystof Daněk forced in a third at the near post on 68.

Suárez gave Sporting late hope on 89, and LASK held on to claim a first Champions League victory and a first away win in the competition. The numbers ran against the scoreline: Sporting had 62.2 per cent of the ball, 16 shots to 11 and seven corners to four, but LASK had seven shots on target to four. Fenerbahçe2-2Slavia Prague

Slavia Prague, two goals down after 11 minutes, equalise on 90 through substitute Pavel Kačor to draw 2-2 at Fenerbahçe and win their first point of the league phase

Fenerbahçe led by two goals after 11 minutes and finished with a point. Oguz Aydın came inside from the right and bent a left-footed shot into the top corner from 25 yards on 4, and Mason Greenwood, with his seventh goal of the season, took Nélson Semedo's pass on his left foot and finished with his right on 11. A misplaced pass from the back by Fenerbahçe's Matteo Guendouzi then gave Slavia's Lukas Provod a first-time finish on 15, and Slavia Prague, who had no point to their name, pushed on after the break until Pavel Kačor, 20, a substitute scoring his first goal for Slavia's senior side, volleyed in Emmanuel Ayaosi's cross on 90 and beat Fenerbahçe goalkeeper Ederson.

Each side had 15 shots and four on target, Slavia had 50.9 per cent of the ball and five corners to three, and Fenerbahçe, who had lost 6-0 to Aston Villa a week earlier, have two points from three games. Sabah FK1-2Borussia Dortmund

Serhou Guirassy scores in each half as Borussia Dortmund beat Sabah 2-1 in Azerbaijan

Serhou Guirassy had a goal in each half to take Borussia Dortmund past Sabah in Azerbaijan. Dortmund, beaten 1-0 at Bodo/Glimt a week earlier, went ahead on 10, Guirassy reacting first after Sabah's goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov could not hold a shot, and Sabah, buoyed by their first Champions League win a week earlier, steadied and levelled on 39 when Aden McCarthy headed in a free-kick from the right. Sabah's Joy-Lance Mickels had an effort ruled out for offside before the interval, and on 53 Guirassy cushioned a volley past Pokatilov from a cross by Dortmund's Joey Veerman.

The closing stages stretched out, with Dortmund's Guirassy and Fábio Silva both failing to score in one-on-one chances and Sabah's substitute Orphe Mbina blazing wide, but nobody found another goal. Dortmund had 22 shots to 13 and nine on target to four, and have six points to Sabah's three. Dortmund host Real Betis on 4 November, kick-off 20:00, and Sabah go to Viking at the same hour.

Porto0-1PSV

Guus Til scores on 57 minutes and PSV win 1-0 at Porto, who have now lost all three of their league-phase games

PSV won in this season's Champions League for the first time, and Porto, beaten for the third game running, still have no points. Guus Til scored on 57 at the back post, converting Sven Mijnans's shot, which was trickling wide after PSV had worked their way in down the right. PSV had twice struck the woodwork, through Filip Kostić and Esmir Bajraktarević, while it was goalless, and in stoppage time Porto pushed for an equaliser: Pepê fired wide, Hwang In-beom was blocked and PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovář saved Alberto Costa's header.

PSV had 59.6 per cent of the ball and 18 shots to 14, though Porto had four on target to three. Domestically, Porto have won eight league games out of eight. PSV host Club Brugge on 4 November, kick-off 20:00, and Porto host Napoli at the same hour.

Roma4-0Slovan Bratislava

Roma score four, including a Donyell Malen penalty on 58 minutes, and Slovan Bratislava manage one shot

Roma had lost 4-3 to Real Madrid a week earlier, three goals conceded in the final seven minutes, and here they were in front by the 21st minute. Daniele Ghilardi nodded Lorenzo Pellegrini's free-kick down and Mario Hermoso headed in from practically on the line. Nahuel Molina forced in the second at the back post on 39, his first for Roma, after Slovan goalkeeper Dominik Takáč pushed Donyell Malen's shot across the goal. After the interval Matias Soulé won the ball in the area, Malen laid it back for Niccolo Pisilli to turn in on 52, and Malen scored a penalty on 58 after Slovan's Cesar Blackman fouled Wesley.

Roma had 26 shots to Slovan's one, ten on target to none, and 72.7 per cent of the ball. It was their first win of the season in the competition, after a draw with Fenerbahçe and the defeat by Real Madrid. Slovan, managed by the former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Touré, have no points and a goal difference of minus twelve. Roma travel to Manchester United on 3 November, kick-off 20:00, and Slovan go to LASK at the same hour.

Galatasaray led after 66 seconds, when Yunus Akgün punished a loose header out of the Lille defence by Alexsandro, and Lille were level by the seventh minute, Soriba Diaoune, 19, running on to a through-ball from the same Alexsandro to round Galatasaray goalkeeper Ugurcan Çakır. A penalty awarded to Galatasaray for what looked like a trip by Lille goalkeeper Berke Özer on Victor Osimhen was withdrawn after a VAR review showed that the goalkeeper had won the ball. Diaoune put Lille ahead on 39 with a finish on the rebound after a save, and Galatasaray's Aleksey Batrakov, left unmarked, levelled by heading in Roland Sallai's cross a minute before the interval.

Lucas Torreira's near-post header for Galatasaray from a corner took a last touch off Özer and was recorded as an own goal on 52, and Osimhen finished a swift counter-attack on 61, against his old club, his first Champions League goal since February. Galatasaray had their first points of the campaign, a week after a home defeat by Barcelona. Lille, who have lost both of their Champions League home games this season from winning positions, are still without any. Galatasaray host Stuttgart on 3 November (17:45), and Lille go to Bodo/Glimt later that night.

The own goal on 52 is recorded against Lille goalkeeper Berke Özer and is listed under Galatasaray, the side it benefited.

Club Brugge3-0Lens

Club Brugge score in first-half stoppage time and twice more to beat Lens 3-0, although Lens have 19 shots to their 11

Lens had the better of the first half, with 11 shots to four, an attempt from Lens's Junior Kadile cleared off the goal-line and a close-range Kadile header saved by Club Brugge's Yann Sommer, and Club Brugge led at the interval anyway. A corner flicked on by Nicolo Tresoldi led to a save, and the parry fell to their captain Hans Vanaken, who tapped in from the six-yard box in the third minute of first-half stoppage time. Joaquin Seys made it two on 50, reacting quickest after his first effort from Carlos Forbs's cross was saved, and Forbs sealed it on the counter-attack on 72, played in down the right by Vetlesen, a substitute, and lifting the ball past the advancing goalkeeper.

Lens finished with 19 shots to Club Brugge's 11 and seven on target to five, and Club Brugge, winners 4-3 at Inter Milan the week before, now have two Champions League wins in a row. They go to PSV on 4 November, kick-off 20:00, and Lens host Como at the same hour.

Real Betis1-0Feyenoord

Isco scores a penalty on 59 minutes and Real Betis beat Feyenoord 1-0 to stay perfect after three games

Real Betis are back in the Champions League for the first time in 21 years, and they opened with two 3-2 wins, over Lille and Porto, both from behind. This time they did not have to chase the game. They controlled much of the first half, though they were lucky to go in level after Gjivai Zechiël blasted over from seven yards for Feyenoord, and after the break Isco scored from the penalty spot on 59, when a shot from Abde Ezzalzouli struck the hand of Feyenoord's Jeremiah St. Juste. It was his second penalty in as many Champions League games.

Betis's Antony went off with a limp, the home side lost some of their attacking edge, and the home supporters grew anxious as Feyenoord pushed for an equaliser, but they hung on. Betis had 23 shots to 12 and ten on target to two, and have nine points from three games. They go to Borussia Dortmund on 4 November, kick-off 20:00, a day after Feyenoord host Inter Milan.

  • Positions one to eight: straight to the round of 16
  • Positions nine to 24: knockout play-offs
  • Positions 25 to 36: out of Europe

The BBC table page was archived on 22 October and last updated on 22 October; no league-phase game was played after the end of matchday three on 21 October, so these are the standings after matchday three. They are here for reference, with the bands marked: after three games the order is provisional.

Five clubs have won all three of their games and have nine points: Paris Saint-Germain, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Real Betis. Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa are level on goal difference at plus nine, and goals scored, 14 against 12, separates them; Liverpool and Real Madrid are level at plus five, and goals scored, 12 against ten, separates those two. Stuttgart and Arsenal, who have not lost, have seven points. Six clubs have six: Barcelona, Como, Manchester City, Club Brugge, Sporting and Borussia Dortmund. Barcelona and Como are level on goal difference at plus five and are divided by a single goal scored, 11 to 10. Bayern Munich have five points, from a win and two draws, and Slovan Bratislava, Porto and Lille have none.

The bands matter more than the order. While the league phase is in progress, ties are broken by goal difference, goals scored, away goals scored, wins and away wins, and clubs still level on all of those are ranked equal and listed alphabetically; Inter Milan and Manchester United, and AEK Athens and RB Leipzig, are level on every one, although the table numbers them one after the other. Five further criteria apply only after the final matches. The top eight at the end of the eighth matchday on 27 January go straight to the round of 16. The clubs from ninth to 24th play two-legged knockout play-offs on 16 and 17 February and 23 and 24 February, with those from ninth to 16th seeded for the draw and those from 17th to 24th unseeded. The clubs from 25th to 36th are out of Europe altogether. The round of 16 is on 9 and 10 March and 16 and 17 March, the quarter-finals are in April, the semi-finals are at the end of April and the start of May, and the final is in Madrid on 5 June 2027. Five matchdays remain.
