How the game unfolded

Everton won with the smaller share of the ball and the sharper finishing. Garner scored the first goal in the 34th minute from Hackney's assist, and Hackney scored the second in the 45th from Barry's, so Everton went in at half-time 2-0 up. Barry's goal came in the 69th minute from Dewsbury-Hall's assist, Everton's third. Hackney and Barry each finished with an assist and a goal. Burn scored for Newcastle in the 88th minute from Willock's assist to make it 3-1.

Newcastle's numbers are the bigger ones on most counts: 28 shots to 11, 57 per cent of possession to 43, 10 corners to 4, 27 crosses to 9 and 36 touches in the opposition box to 17. They completed 354 of 428 passes at 82.7 per cent, against 252 of 333 at 75.7 per cent for Everton. Their 28 shots split into 9 on target, 10 off target and 9 blocked. Everton's 11 split into 5 on target, 2 off target and 4 blocked.

None of that bought Newcastle a lead. Everton made 8 saves to Newcastle's 2 and cleared the ball 34 times to 24, which is a defence kept busy. Newcastle needed nine shots on target to score once; Everton needed five to score three. The finishing decided it.

Matthias Jaissle changed three players at half-time, bringing on Joelinton, Elanga and Wissa for Ramsey, Barnes and Osula, then sent on Touré for Murphy in the 67th minute and Steur for Nico González in the 81st. Barry's goal in the 69th came after the first four of those changes; Burn's in the 88th came after all five. David Moyes made five changes of his own, the first in the 65th minute when Armstrong replaced Hackney, who had scored the second goal and been booked in the 60th. Alcaraz and Johnson came on in the 76th, and Maitland-Niles and Nørgaard in the 86th.

Everton collected five yellow cards, Hackney in the 60th minute, Dewsbury-Hall in the 74th, Mykolenko in the 81st and Pickford and Tarkowski in the 89th. Newcastle had three: Schär in the 81st, then Burn and Joelinton in the 89th. Four of the eight bookings came in the 89th minute, the minute after Burn's goal in the 88th. Everton committed 18 fouls to Newcastle's 15.

The attendance at Hill Dickinson Stadium was 51,894, with Farai Hallam the referee, and both sides lined up in the same formation. Before this game Everton had won two of their five listed matches, drawn one and lost two, including a 1-0 League Cup win over Wolverhampton Wanderers; Newcastle had won two and lost three, among them defeats of 1-4 to Coventry City and to Leeds United.
