Grimsby score three times after the break against York and climb to sixth

Grimsby beat York 5-2 at Blundell Park in front of 8,111, scoring three times in the second half after the sides went in level at 2-2. York had 69 per cent of the ball and made 524 passes to Grimsby's 226. Grimsby took 24 shots to York's 10 and put eight on target to three, and that is the truer measure of the game. It was their second league win in a row, after a 4-1 win over Gillingham in their previous game.

Grimsby's Andy Cook headed them in front in the 13th minute, meeting a cross from his team-mate Cameron McJannet at the end of a move down the left. York's Alex Hunt, a former Grimsby player, levelled in the 18th minute with a low drive, and his York team-mate Jack Hunt cut inside on the right and curled a shot in to put the visitors ahead in the 28th. Grimsby's Iwan Morgan was quickest to a rebound in the 31st minute, and it stayed 2-2 until half-time.

The second half's three goals all went to Grimsby. Morgan, who had scored Grimsby's second goal, turned provider in the 75th minute, crossing for his team-mate McJannet to head in at the far post. Grimsby substitute Josh Andrews, on since the 67th minute, scored the fourth on a counter-attack in the 78th from a pass by his team-mate Turi, and Grimsby's Turi scored the fifth himself in the 86th, set up by another Grimsby substitute, Amaluzor.

Grimsby rise from 11th to sixth on 20 points, the joint-biggest climb of the round with Port Vale. York, who lost to Barnet on Tuesday, drop from fifth to seventh and are level with Grimsby on points. Grimsby are at Swindon at three o'clock on Saturday 14 November.

Newport lead 4-0 at half-time and stretch their home league run to nine games

Newport led Chesterfield 4-0 at half-time on Friday and won 4-1, making it nine league games unbeaten at home, the club's best such run since an 11-game stretch in 2020. Chesterfield had 71 per cent of the ball, and Newport still took 21 shots to 12 and put five on target to three.

Newport's two full-backs scored first. Newport right-back Cameron Norman struck a free-kick in from the edge of the penalty area in the 14th minute, and his team-mate Tom Davies, the left-back, added a deflected second in the 18th from a pass by Newport's Harrison Biggins. Biggins scored the third for Newport from distance in the 29th minute, and Newport's Bamba curled in the fourth in first-half stoppage time.

Paul Cook, the Chesterfield manager, was dismissed at the interval. Chesterfield's Liam Mandeville pulled one back in the 58th minute with a finish that went in via the left post. Newport manager Hayden Mullins called it "probably the best 45 minutes that we have put together this season".
