Editor's Note

Manchester United's summer began in Helsinki with a £50m debutant, a full set of half-time changes and a defeat to a Championship side. Pre-season results are famously disposable, but the details rarely are. Here is what actually happened at the Olympic Stadium, and what it tells us about Michael Carrick's first weeks in the job.

Manchester United lost 1-0 to Wrexham in their opening pre-season fixture at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki on Saturday, with Andrey Santos making his first appearance since his £50m move from Chelsea. Sam Smith scored the only goal at the far post before the break. A friendly in July settles nothing, and it still made for an untidy first page of the Carrick era.

A goal from nothing, through Maguire's legs

Wrexham's winner arrived six minutes before half-time, out of nothing and at odds with everything that had preceded it. The Championship side worked a throw-in down their left, Thomason linked up with O'Brien, and O'Brien's low ball across the six-yard box somehow travelled through Maguire's legs to the unmarked Smith, who had the simplest of far-post tap-ins. Goals like that are less about the finish than the delivery route: a ball allowed to cross the six-yard box untouched is the kind of detail a coaching staff files away for the video room.

United had been the better side to that point. Some neat build-up around the Wrexham box ended with Zirkzee flashing a fierce drive inches past the left-hand post, and shortly before the goal Mount's inswinging corner was headed against his own bar by Smith, under pressure from Yoro at the near post. Three minutes later Smith was tapping in at the other end. Football keeps its sense of humour even in July.

Santos gets his 45 minutes

The main event for United supporters was the debut of Santos. The Brazil midfielder played the first 45 minutes following his recent transfer from Chelsea, and had little chance to impress before Carrick, United's new permanent head coach, changed every player at the break with his side trailing. Bryan Mbeumo was among those given a 45-minute runout in the first half.

There was earlier promise in defence too. Early in the first half Heaven produced a wonderfully well-timed tackle in the box on Cadamarteri, son of the former Everton striker Danny, to win back possession, the sort of challenge where mistiming it costs a penalty and a scoreline.

The kids, the keeper and a save worth keeping

Carrick sent on United's Academy players for the second half, captained by Tyler Fletcher, in search of a way back into the contest. It never came. The closest thing to a second-half highlight belonged to the other end: midway through the period, Davis Keillor-Dunn was played clean through on goal by a defence-splitting pass, and backup goalkeeper Radek Vitek, who caught the eye on loan at Bristol City last season, stood up tall and made an important block with his legs. In truth, without Vitek the scoreline would have flattered United less.

So the afternoon produced one clean takeaway on either side of the ledger: a young goalkeeper who looks comfortable in senior company, and a senior defence that conceded the game's only goal from a throw-in.

What comes next

The pre-season tour continues quickly. United face Rosenborg in Trondheim on July 24 at 5pm, then Atletico Madrid in Stockholm on August 1 at 2pm, PSG in Gothenburg on August 8 at 4pm, Leeds in Dublin on August 12 at 7.30pm and AC Milan in Wroclaw on August 15 at 3.45pm. Five fixtures, five progressively harder examinations, and by Milan the half-time wholesale changes will have given way to something closer to a first eleven. Pre-season is a laboratory. Saturday supplied Carrick with his first set of results, and not the sort that go on the fridge.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Who scored in Manchester United's 1-0 pre-season defeat to Wrexham?

Sam Smith scored the only goal for Wrexham six minutes before half-time at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki. A throw-in down Wrexham's left was worked from Thomason to O'Brien, whose low cross travelled through Maguire's legs to leave Smith an unmarked tap-in at the far post. Minutes earlier Smith had headed a Mount corner against his own bar.

Did Andrey Santos play in Manchester United's friendly against Wrexham?

Yes. The Brazil midfielder made his Manchester United debut in the fixture, playing the first 45 minutes after his £50m transfer from Chelsea. He had limited opportunity to impress: head coach Michael Carrick replaced the entire team at half-time with United trailing, sending on Academy players captained by Tyler Fletcher for the second half.

When is Manchester United's next pre-season friendly?

United play Rosenborg in Trondheim on July 24 at 5pm. The remaining pre-season schedule takes in Atletico Madrid in Stockholm on August 1, PSG in Gothenburg on August 8, Leeds in Dublin on August 12 and AC Milan in Wroclaw on August 15 before the 2026/27 season begins.
