Mohamed Salah and Trabzonspor: a transfer built to change more than a forward line

Trabzonspor appear to be buying far more than a left foot and a familiar celebration. Mohamed Salah’s expected arrival is a wager that one of football’s most recognisable players can alter the atmosphere around a club whose supporters had appeared to drift away, while asking the club to depart from a recruitment model built around younger players and resale value.

The BBC reports that Trabzonspor are set to confirm the signing of the Egypt captain after Salah arrived in Turkey to a large welcome from supporters. There is an obvious footballing attraction in a player who left Liverpool with 257 goals after nine years, has scored 50 Champions League goals and won four Premier League Golden Boots. The more revealing part of this move, though, is the shape of the bet: a free agent can still be expensive when the savings on a transfer fee are redirected towards wages.

Salah, 34, is arriving after a final Liverpool season in which he scored seven Premier League goals. That figure sits awkwardly beside the 29 goals and 18 assists credited to him in Liverpool’s 2024-25 title-winning campaign. It also explains why this is not simply a victory lap for a celebrated player. Trabzonspor are taking on a forward whose recent output has changed sharply, and whose reputation remains immense.

A free transfer is not a cheap decision

The reported deal contains one financial fact and one important unknown. Salah is a free agent, so Trabzonspor do not need to pay a transfer fee; the BBC says that status allows the Super Lig club to commit more of its budget towards his wages. What he will earn is unclear.

That uncertainty matters because Salah became Liverpool’s highest earner when he signed a reported £400,000-a-week contract in April 2025. It does not establish the terms available in Turkey, nor does it tell us the size of Trabzonspor’s commitment. It does establish the scale of the player’s previous contract and the sort of status his new club are attempting to accommodate.

For Trabzonspor, the attraction is not hard to identify. The club have won seven Turkish league titles, though six came between 1976 and 1984. Their most recent title arrived in 2022, ending a 38-year wait. The record gives the club history, yet the current challenge is to make that history feel present again.

Signing Salah does not erase that approach, but it changes the balance of the squad-building argument. Resale value is a future calculation. Salah is an attempt to make an immediate impact on attention, attendance and commercial appeal.

The crowd is part of the deal

The arrival itself supplied the first evidence of what Trabzonspor believe they have bought. Hundreds of fans gathered outside Ataturk Airport in Istanbul on Wednesday as Salah emerged in Trabzonspor colours and engaged with the crowd. The club had teased his arrival with a video placing the Pyramids beside Papara Park, then posted that negotiations had begun and showed how his flight could be tracked.

Salah’s own message was brief: “Trabzon, are you ready? See you very soon.” It was enough to turn a contract negotiation into a public event before confirmation.

The BBC says enthusiasm among Trabzonspor supporters had appeared to fade, with Papara Park often below capacity. That makes the airport gathering more than a colourful transfer ritual. It is the first public measure of the interest the club hope to revive. Abatay writes that Salah’s arrival should bring supporters back and significantly increase shirt sales; it could also broaden Trabzonspor’s commercial appeal across the Middle East and create particular interest among the Arab community in Trabzon and visitors to the city.

Those outcomes remain expectations, not guarantees. Shirt sales do not settle a wage bill, and an airport welcome cannot promise a full stadium across a season. Still, the reasoning is clear. Trabzonspor have chosen a player whose name can travel further than a conventional signing, then made the arrival itself part of the appeal.

European football gives the move a competitive frame

Trabzonspor finished third last season, eight points behind champions Galatasaray, and will play European football in the coming campaign. They can reach the Europa League league phase through the play-offs; failure to do so would send them into the Conference League instead.

That qualification route gives Salah a competitive setting beyond domestic fixtures, although the eventual competition is not settled. It also places Trabzonspor inside a league now crowded with established names. The BBC notes that Fenerbahce supporters can watch N’Golo Kante and Ederson, while Galatasaray have Victor Osimhen, Ilkay Gundogan and Leroy Sane. Turkish football has previously included Roberto Carlos, Didier Drogba, Robin van Persie, Samuel Eto’o, Mesut Ozil and Wesley Sneijder.

Salah’s status is therefore remarkable without being isolated. The difference is that he joins a club trying to break a pattern of dominance by Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, rather than one of those two clubs. Trabzonspor have a title-winning past and a 2022 championship to point to, yet their league position last season was third. The signing is designed to make their challenge feel larger.

Liverpool’s record and the question of the present

No transfer announcement can reduce Salah’s Liverpool career to the final seven Premier League goals. He helped the club win two Premier League titles, the Champions League, Club World Cup, Uefa Super Cup, FA Cup and two EFL Cups. He was named Professional Footballers’ Association player of the year in 2018, 2022 and 2025.

The difficulty is that his last two seasons, as described in the BBC report, point in different directions. In 2024-25 he produced 29 goals and 18 assists as Liverpool won the title. The following campaign brought fewer minutes after a falling out with former Reds head coach Arne Slot, alongside the seven Premier League goals in his final Liverpool season.

Trabzonspor are not signing a blank slate. They are signing a player with an enormous body of work and a recent season that supplies a harder question. Can the club get the version of Salah who remains decisive at the top end of the game, rather than merely the player whose arrival fills a terminal forecourt? The report does not answer it. Nor should a welcome be mistaken for an answer.

A change of strategy, loudly announced

The deal reportedly came together after Salah had been close to an agreement with Besiktas, only for that move to break down reportedly because of finances. He then reached an agreement with Trabzonspor, according to the BBC. Even that sequence reinforces the central tension: the terms around a player of Salah’s profile can decide where the football goes next.

Trabzonspor’s current squad includes on-loan Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana and Cape Verde World Cup players Wagner Pina and Sidny Lopes Cabral. Salah is a different order of signing. The BBC says he will be the club’s biggest, joining former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge and former Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe in wearing the claret and sky blue shirt.

There is no need to pretend the calculation is subtle. A club known as the Black Sea Storm has selected a global star in the hope that he changes the weather around it. The player’s wages are unclear, the Europa League route remains unfinished and the scale of any commercial return cannot yet be known. What is already clear is that Trabzonspor have made their ambition visible before Salah has played a minute.
