Chelsea’s four-forward question framed Xabi Alonso’s first selection

Six goals gave Xabi Alonso a pleasant first result. Four strikers gave him the less pleasant part of the job.

Chelsea’s 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers was a pre-season match played with players still adjusting to jet lag and with gaps in the squad. It should not be mistaken for a settled verdict on Alonso’s football. Yet it supplied a remarkably neat version of his immediate centre-forward problem: Joao Pedro made himself difficult to dislodge, Liam Delap looked short of confidence, Dastan Satpaev offered a teenage alternative, and Danny Welbeck remained a possible experienced arrival.

The scoreline also deserves its correct scale. The reported gulf between Premier League and A-League opposition helps explain why a nine-minute hat-trick is evidence of sharp finishing rather than a complete answer to Chelsea’s season-long questions. Still, a forward cannot choose the occasion in which he looks most certain of himself. Joao Pedro chose this one.

Joao Pedro has made the simplest case

The Brazilian scored three times in nine minutes as Chelsea began Alonso’s reign with victory. He brought power, pace and finishing, according to the report, and stood apart in a performance otherwise described as sloppy and imperfect.

That contrast is the important one. Chelsea do not need to turn a friendly against Western Sydney into a coronation; they do need to notice which player has supplied the clearest attacking contribution. Alonso called Joao Pedro “very, very hungry” and said he was determined to have a great season. Those are managerial words, not a guarantee of selection, although the hat-trick gives them a useful factual base.

With injured Emmanuel Emegha and Nicolas Jackson also on the books, the competition is not yet a straight line from Joao Pedro to the opening league team. Morgan Rogers, the club-record £117m signing, was among players still on holiday after the World Cup. The first XI remains incomplete. But Joao Pedro has started the argument at the only end of the pitch where it matters most: with goals.

Delap’s issue is no longer theoretical

Liam Delap began alongside Satpaev and again struggled, the report said, as he has in almost every Chelsea appearance since joining from Ipswich for £30m last summer. The suggestion that he appears short of confidence is more damaging than one quiet friendly because it places a pattern beside a fee.

There is no reported decision that Delap will leave. There is, however, a reported possibility that he could be sold while Chelsea advance talks for Welbeck. That changes the reading of his performance. A striker short of confidence can be given time; a striker short of confidence while the club seeks an experienced replacement occupies a more precarious place.

Alonso’s public language points towards squad balance rather than a verdict on any individual. “We need balance,” he said when asked about Welbeck and Jordan Henderson. It is a sensible principle, though balance has a habit of becoming very specific when a player’s route to minutes narrows.

Satpaev is an opportunity, not yet a solution

Satpaev scored the first goal of Alonso’s reign after six minutes, doing so while technically a triallist because he cannot formally complete his move from FC Kairat until 12 August. At 17, he is attempting to become the first Kazakh player to appear in a Premier League match.

His performance makes the recruitment timeline awkward in the useful way youth prospects sometimes do. Alonso knew him from Almaty, having faced him with Real Madrid last season, and praised his movement into the inner channel and ability to arrive from wide areas. The manager also said decisions still had to be made amid talk of a possible loan.

That is the right degree of caution. A goal in this match does not make Satpaev Chelsea’s answer at centre-forward. It does make him more than a distant name on a future list. He is quick, sharp in the box and already attracting attention from supporters from Kazakhstan in Sydney. For a squad looking at older reinforcements, his presence offers a reminder that experience is only one side of the calculation.

Welbeck would answer a different question

Chelsea have agreed personal terms with Welbeck and are optimistic a deal can be reached, while Brighton have declined to comment. The 35-year-old would not arrive as a verdict that youth has failed or that Joao Pedro cannot lead the line. He would represent the experience and leadership Chelsea are seeking after a disappointing 2025-26 season.

That distinction matters because the four-striker story is not really about choosing one winner from a friendly. Joao Pedro supplies present momentum. Delap faces a confidence problem and possible uncertainty. Satpaev represents a decision on development. Welbeck, if a deal is reached, may offer a stabilising senior option.

Alonso also used the 4-2-3-1 system favoured by Enzo Maresca. In his pre-match media conference, he expressed surprise at how well the seven academy players drafted in to fill gaps in the squad had performed in training. Midfielders Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, Reggie Walsh and Reggie Watson impressed, with Watson the only player to complete the game, and Jamie Gittens made it three goals in three pre-season appearances. The wider picture is therefore one of an early squad experiment, not a finished tactical plan.

Yet the forward line has already provided the clearest tension. Chelsea scored six; Joao Pedro scored half of them. The arithmetic is simple. Alonso’s selection problem is not.
