That framing matters enormously. If the defence can demonstrate that the exposure was inadvertent and connected to medical provision within the national team set-up rather than any deliberate performance-enhancing intent, it opens a route to a significantly reduced sanction or even a full exoneration. Meldonium cases have historically been complicated by the substance's long detection window in the body, a factor that previously worked against athletes who had stopped taking it before the ban came into force. That same pharmacological characteristic, however, can also work in an athlete's favour when establishing that a single, isolated exposure rather than sustained use was responsible for the positive test.

Mudryk is being represented by Morgan Sports Law, a firm with considerable experience navigating exactly this kind of complex, high-profile doping dispute. The same firm worked with Paul Pogba during his four-year ban, later reduced to 18 months on appeal, while he was at Juventus. They also acted for boxer Tyson Fury and cyclist Chris Froome during their respective investigations, both of which ultimately resulted in no bans being imposed.

The choice of legal representation signals that Mudryk and those around him are treating this process with the seriousness it demands. Morgan Sports Law's track record suggests a strategy built around challenging the source of the substance and the athlete's degree of fault rather than disputing the presence of the compound itself. That approach has worked before, though outcomes at CAS are never straightforward. The Pogba case is instructive here: a significant reduction was achieved, but it still required exhausting the full appeals process, and the athlete lost the best part of two seasons regardless of the eventual outcome.

Life on the Sidelines

While the legal process moves at its own pace, Mudryk has been keeping himself in condition at non-league Uxbridge FC, training with a private coach and reportedly hiring goalkeepers to work with. It is an unusual arrangement for a player signed for an initial €70 million, but it reflects both his determination to stay sharp and the genuine uncertainty about when, or whether, he will return to the top level. Maintaining match sharpness over an extended absence of this kind is genuinely difficult; match fitness is a different quality from training fitness, and returning to Premier League pace after 18 months in cold storage would present a significant challenge even for a player of Mudryk's physical profile.

Chelsea have declined to comment while the process runs its course. That is the only responsible position for the club to take at this stage, though the financial and sporting implications for Stamford Bridge are considerable. If the CAS panel is persuaded that the meldonium exposure occurred without his knowledge or meaningful contribution, the standard four-year ban could be reduced substantially, potentially to the point where time already served covers the remainder.
