Substitute Ramsey is sent off
Ramsey came on for Joelinton in the 75th minute. He was booked at 90+6 and shown a second yellow at 90+8, so Newcastle played out the last of the game a man short. Schär and Johnson were both booked at 90+9.
How the game unfolded
John Brooks refereed in front of 52,279. Both managers picked a four-two-three-one. Matthias Jaissle started Horníček in goal for Newcastle United behind Hall, Burn, Schär and Dedić, with Nico González and Joelinton in midfield and Barnes, Willock and Elanga supporting Osula. David Moyes named Pickford behind Mykolenko, Branthwaite, Tarkowski and O'Brien, with Garner and Armstrong as the pair in front of them and George, Dewsbury-Hall and Röhl behind Barry.
The first half produced one card and no goals. Burn was booked in the 32nd minute, and the teams went in level at 0-0. Barry scored early in the second half, in the 49th minute, and Everton's George was booked in the 52nd.
Jaissle made five substitutions. Steur replaced Nico González and Wissa replaced Willock in the 64th minute, Ramsey came on for Joelinton in the 75th and Murphy for Elanga in the 76th. Moyes made his first change in the 80th, Johnson for Barry, then Keane for Branthwaite in the 82nd. Touré replaced Dedić in the 87th. Hackney came on for George in the 92nd. The stoppage time belonged to the referee's notebook: Ramsey was booked at 90+6 and sent off at 90+8, and Schär and Johnson were booked at 90+9.
On the plain counts, this was an even game. Newcastle had 52 per cent of the ball, 17 shots to 16, 419 passes to 393 and 24 crosses to 22. Pass accuracy barely separated them, 79.2 per cent for Newcastle and 79.9 for Everton. The difference was in where the shooting came from and what it hit. Ten of Newcastle's 17 shots were from outside the box, and six were blocked against Everton's one. Only two reached the target, and Everton were credited with two saves. Everton put five on target, Horníček's side were credited with four saves, and one went in.
Everton won the physical contest. They won 25 aerial duels to 13 and 56 duels to 31, and they played 62 long balls to Newcastle's 54. The tackling was close, 10 attempted by Everton to Newcastle's 8, with four won by each side. With 25 aerial duels won to 13, Everton met Newcastle's 24 crosses like a household that is always in when the post arrives. Newcastle also made more clearances, 33 to 26, so the ball spent much of their night being sent back where it came from.
Expected goals of 2.15 against 1.47 put Everton ahead on the chances they made as well as on shots on target. They had more touches in the opposition box, 30 to 28, from fewer shots. The figures that measure chances were Everton's as well.
Moyes told BBC Match of the Day: "I think we deserved it overall." Jaissle told BBC Sport: "Today we didn't play well." Here the two managers and the numbers agree.
