Premier League match reviews: 17 October 2026 to 19 October 2026

Diego Gómez scored from the halfway line as Brighton & Hove Albion beat Crystal Palace 5-0, and Manchester City won their seventh Premier League game in seven, 3-2 against Ipswich Town.

The seventh round of the season produced 26 goals across ten fixtures, five home wins, four away wins, one draw and four dismissals: Yehor Yarmoliuk and Vitaly Janelt for Brentford, Ryan Sessegnon for Fulham and Kevin Danso for Sunderland. Fulham, Bournemouth and Tottenham Hotspur each won a league game for the first time this season, so every club in the division now has at least one league win. Chelsea, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal all won away from home.

Manchester City have 21 points, three clear of Arsenal on 18 and five ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion on 16, and no other club is still unbeaten. The next round runs from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 October.

Pedro Neto scores in the 46th and 90th minutes to give Chelsea a win at Everton, who lose a league game for the first time this season

Pedro Neto scored twice, once at each end of the second half, and Chelsea won 2-0 at Everton on a day when their goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez was taken to hospital.

The first half was short of goals and long on bookings. Five players were cautioned before the interval: Everton's Armstrong at 23 minutes, Chelsea's Neto at 27 and Acheampong at 32, and Everton's Tarkowski and Chelsea's Morgan Rogers at 34. Everton wanted a second yellow card for Rogers after a 50-50 challenge on James Garner. Their best chance of a goalless half was a close-range header from Thierno Barry that went straight at Martínez.

Chelsea scored in the opening minute of the second half, when Jorrel Hato's cutback took a deflection and Neto finished. In the 75th minute Martínez and the Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite clashed heads going for the ball. Branthwaite played on after treatment, while the match stopped for ten minutes as the 34-year-old goalkeeper received medical attention. He could move his arms as he was carried off on a stretcher and went straight to hospital. Mike Penders, a 21-year-old Belgian, replaced him and made his Premier League debut.

Neto's second came in the 90th minute: Jordan Henderson's free-kick hit the wall and Neto rolled a calm finish into the bottom corner. It was his first double in the Premier League, in his 187th appearance in the English top flight. Moises Caicedo struck a volley that hit the angle of post and crossbar, and Cole Palmer, who had six shots in all, lobbed one onto the roof of the net from a through ball by Rogers. Chelsea had 18 shots to six and seven on target to five, with 52.8 per cent of the ball, and Everton had two shots after the break. It was Chelsea's first league clean sheet since 17 January, which ended a run of 22 games in which they had conceded. They are fourth on 13 points, and Everton, who began the day as one of three unbeaten sides, are eighth on 10. Chelsea host Tottenham Hotspur next Saturday, and Everton are at Arsenal.

Liverpool come from a goal down to beat Brentford, who finish with nine men after two dismissals

Liverpool came from a goal behind to beat Brentford 2-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium, and they did it against ten men after Yehor Yarmoliuk was sent off in first-half stoppage time.

Keane Lewis-Potter had put Brentford ahead in the 44th minute with a header, and Keith Andrews's side were in control when the red card came. Yarmoliuk's was at 45+8, as he and Liverpool's Jeremy Jacquet waited for a corner to be taken; the referee, John Brooks, called it a "headbutting action". Liverpool had already lost Dominik Szoboszlai in the first half to what looked like a recurrence of a hamstring injury.

Víctor Muñoz equalised in the 62nd minute, cutting inside to beat Caoimhin Kelleher with his left foot after a pass from Florian Wirtz. Alexander Isak made it 2-1 in the 70th with a clinical finish, after Bradley Barcola headed down Alexis Mac Allister's cross. That made five goals for him this season, and five from five against Brentford: he has scored in every one of his Premier League appearances against them. Jeremie Frimpong, on at the start of the second half, was forced off in the 52nd minute. A second yellow card for Vitaly Janelt, for fouling the substitute Rio Ngumoha in stoppage time, left Brentford with nine.

Liverpool had 60 per cent of the ball and 21 shots to 10, with five on target to two and nine corners to three. They are fifth on 12 points, up from ninth. Brentford, unbeaten in the league until then, are sixth on 10, down from fourth. Brentford travel to Hull City on Sunday 25 October and Liverpool host Brighton & Hove Albion the same day.

Fulham1-0Hull City

Alex Iwobi's deflected shot gives Fulham their first win in the league this season, and Hull City do not manage a shot on target

Fulham won a league game for the first time this season, beating Hull City 1-0 at Craven Cottage, and Hull did not have a single shot on target.

Alex Iwobi scored in the 33rd minute. Two Hull clearances never came, Sander Berge slid the ball into the path of Iwobi at the edge of the area, and a low curler deflected off Lucas Herrington and passed under Konstantinos Tzolakis in goal. Fulham could have won by more. Gonzalo García headed against the bar, and Tzolakis stopped clear chances for Iwobi and Josh King.

Fulham had 76.5 per cent of the ball, 18 shots to five, six on target to none and 10 corners to two, and made 717 passes, their highest total in a league match this season. Mohamed Belloumi's shot dragged wide in the second half, and a late free-kick of his went high into the stands. Fulham's substitute Ryan Sessegnon was sent off at 90+4 for a challenge from behind on Robinio Vaz, his studs catching the calf.

Fulham had been without a win in their first six league games, with two points. "It's a massive game for us," Álvaro Arbeloa told BBC Match Of The Day, and he called the days ahead "a massive week". Iwobi said the players were behind him: "He's a great man, a great manager. He's always talking to us." It was the first time Hull had gone through a Premier League game without a shot on target since they played Crystal Palace in May 2017. Fulham are 18th on five points and Hull ninth on nine. Fulham are at Coventry City on Saturday, and Hull host Brentford on Sunday.

Haaland scores twice as City win a seventh league game in seven, and Zian Flemming's late penalty makes it 3-2

Manchester City won their seventh Premier League game in seven, beating Ipswich Town 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium, with Erling Haaland scoring twice.

It was City's first home league game since the club was found guilty of 114 charges relating to breaches of the Premier League's financial rules between 2009 and 2018, a verdict they are appealing. Supporters booed the Premier League anthem before kick-off and waved inflatable bananas, a tradition revived from the 1980s. Enzo Maresca has said that he and his players can only concentrate on what happens on the pitch while the appeal goes on.

Phil Foden scored in the 19th minute, his first league goal since December. Daizen Maeda beat Marc Guéhi to equalise 155 seconds after that. Haaland restored the lead in the 34th minute and made it 3-1 in the 69th, finishing calmly after Iliman Ndiaye played him through. He thought he had a hat-trick when he fired in an acrobatic finish, but it was disallowed for a marginal offside against Enzo Fernández in the build-up. Zian Flemming scored a penalty in the 90th minute after Guéhi fouled Abdul Fatawu, and City saw out 12 minutes of added time, with the final whistle on 103 minutes.

City had 69.7 per cent of the ball and 19 shots to eight, six on target to three. They became the third club in Premier League history to win each of their first seven games, after Chelsea in 2005-06 and Liverpool in 2019-20. It is 129 years since City opened a league campaign with seven wins, and in 1897-98 they were in the second tier. Maresca has won each of his first seven games in charge, which no other manager has done at a Premier League club. Mateo Kovačić and Matheus Nunes were both forced off with injuries, and Haaland, now on eight league goals, and the substitute Antoine Semenyo both looked to be hobbling late on, Haaland going straight to the tunnel after taking a knock. Gary O'Neil said he was "unbelievably proud" of Ipswich. City lead the table on 21 points, three clear of Arsenal, and Ipswich are tenth on nine. City are at Aston Villa on Saturday at 12:30, and Ipswich host Nottingham Forest on Friday at 20:00.

Johan Manzambi's header decides it for Aston Villa, who stay unbeaten in five games in all competitions, as Newcastle lose their first home league game under Matthias Jaissle

Aston Villa won 1-0 at St James' Park, Johan Manzambi scoring the only goal in the 36th minute, and Newcastle United were booed off at half-time and again at full time.

Manzambi headed in João Gomes's cross. The Switzerland midfielder had come close to joining Newcastle in the summer before signing for Villa instead, and he turned 21 on Wednesday. It was his third goal for the club since the move from Freiburg. Emiliano Buendía came close to a second when his shot hit the left-hand post with Lukas Horníček beaten, and Newcastle had no shot on target in the first half.

In the 18th minute Sven Botman slid in on Nicolas Jackson with a challenge that went over the ball and caught the striker on the ankle. The referee Jarred Gillett showed a yellow card, and the video assistant referee, Stuart Attwell, reviewed it for dangerous play and left it at that. Jackson said afterwards the challenge "nearly broke my leg" but that he "was OK" and it was "part of football". Newcastle had six players booked in all. Botman had a shot on the turn saved by Zion Suzuki, Yoane Wissa headed over and fired another chance wide, and Harvey Barnes curled a cross just wide in the first 40 seconds of the second half.

Newcastle had 16 shots to 15, but one on target to Villa's three, and 49.6 per cent of the ball. It was Unai Emery's 100th Premier League win. Villa have won seven points from their last three league games and are unbeaten in five games in all competitions, after taking one point from their first four league games, and they had beaten Fenerbahçe 6-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday. John McGinn started on the bench in the league for the first time this season, and was on the pitch by the start of the second half. It was Newcastle's first home defeat since Bournemouth won 2-1 on 18 April, and their first at home under Jaissle, after a 4-1 defeat at Coventry City on Monday. Newcastle are 11th on eight points and Villa 12th, also on eight, behind on goals scored. Newcastle are at Crystal Palace on Sunday, and Villa host Manchester City on Saturday.

Bournemouth win a league game for the first time this season after Kevin Danso is sent off in the 17th minute

Bournemouth won a league game for the first time this season, beating Sunderland 2-0, after the visitors' defender Kevin Danso was sent off in the 17th minute.

Marcus Tavernier headed Evanilson's cross into an empty net inside the first six minutes, after Evanilson had bullied his way past Danso. Danso's afternoon got worse. On the edge of the area Evanilson got ahead of Danso a second time, and Danso, falling, dragged him down. The referee Craig Pawson sent him off for stopping a clear chance to score.

Robin Roefs kept the score down with two saves from Rayan, and Adam Smith had a chance to score from the rebound of one of them. Bournemouth's second came three minutes after the restart. Omar Alderete's back pass to Roefs was far too short, Evanilson got to it first, rounded the goalkeeper and slid the ball in. Bournemouth had 29 shots to three, six on target to none, with 64.7 per cent of the ball.

It was Tavernier's fourth goal of the season, which makes him Bournemouth's top scorer, and three of the four have been openers. It was also the first Premier League win for the manager Marco Rose, after losing at Chelsea in the previous round. Sunderland have not won in the league since beating Fulham on 30 August and have not won away from home this season. They have four points from seven games, against 11 at the same stage last season. Bournemouth are 15th on six points, and Sunderland, now last, are on four. Bournemouth are at Manchester United on Sunday, and Sunderland host Leeds United at 16:30 the same day.

Brighton & Hove Albion5-0Crystal Palace

Diego Gómez scores from the halfway line in a 5-0 win, Brighton & Hove Albion's biggest against Crystal Palace since 1956

Diego Gómez scored from the halfway line as Brighton & Hove Albion beat Crystal Palace 5-0, their biggest win over Palace since January 1956.

It was 1-0 after four minutes, when Pascal Groß's free-kick from the left was headed into his own net by Jaydee Canvot at the near post. In the seventh minute Boscagli took the ball off Adam Wharton, and Gómez, a Paraguay midfielder of 23, noticed the goalkeeper Walter Benítez off his line and shot from halfway. Benítez raced back and flung himself at it, but the ball found the net just beneath the bar. Opta measured the shot at 51 metres, the longest goal in the Premier League since Wayne Rooney scored from 58 metres for Everton against West Ham in November 2017. "It's an amazing goal," said the pundit Shay Given, who likened it to David Beckham's against Wimbledon in 1996.

Yasin Ayari made it 3-0 in the tenth minute, running onto a backheel from Charalampos Kostoulas and firing past Benítez. The three goals had come sooner than in any Premier League game since Newcastle United's 6-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in April 2023. Kostoulas scored the fourth four minutes into the second half, after a shot from Ayari deflected into his path, and Jack Hinshelwood made it five in the 84th minute from close range after Benítez parried a header from Luka Vušković. Palace's chances were few: Jean-Philippe Mateta, making his first appearance of the season after a hamstring injury on the opening weekend, hit the crossbar, and a header from Jefferson Lerma struck a post.

Brighton had 17 shots to five, nine on target to one, and 57.3 per cent of the ball. It was their eighth clean sheet in all competitions this season and their fifth league win, and it followed four goals against Kauno Žalgiris in the Conference League on the previous Thursday, nine in four days. Brighton have scored 23 league goals, the most in the division. Palace have conceded 17 in seven games, the most in the league, and lost 3-2 at Lyon in the Europa League on the previous Thursday after trailing 2-0. Their manager Pierre Sage said he felt "shame" and apologised to the supporters: "It's my fault because I am the coach." Wharton said: "We couldn't have started any worse." Brighton are third on 16 points and Palace 14th on seven. Both play in Europe on Thursday 22 October, Brighton at Jablonec in the Conference League and Palace at Besiktas in the Europa League, before Brighton visit Liverpool on Sunday and Palace host Newcastle United.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin's equaliser denies Manchester United a first win in six games, and Leeds stay unbeaten at home

Leeds United and Manchester United drew 1-1 at Elland Road, Dominic Calvert-Lewin cancelling out a first-half goal from Bryan Mbeumo.

It was a fiery start, with more bookings than shots: Bruno Fernandes was cautioned in the 17th minute and Gabriel Gudmundsson in the 19th. United's Lisandro Martínez, who had been fined during the week for criticising the club's hierarchy, started the game. Senne Lammens made a full-stretch save from Nico Elvedi, and shortly afterwards an unmarked Mbeumo headed off target. In the 35th minute Mbeumo got the better of James Justin to meet a pass from Youri Tielemans and gave United the lead.

Calvert-Lewin levelled in the 51st minute. Tarik Muharemović was first to a corner, and Calvert-Lewin beat Mbeumo to the loose ball. Fernandes pulled a shot wide, and Anton Stach could not keep a first-time strike down. Ampadu and Andrey Santos were both booked at 90+2.

Leeds had 60.8 per cent of the ball, with 12 shots to 13, five on target to three. In all competitions United have now gone six games without winning, a sequence they had not matched since the end of 2018-19. Their one league win, against promoted Ipswich Town in August, is the fewest from seven games of a top-flight season in 40 years, and Michael Carrick, who took over after Rúben Amorim was sacked, was given a two-year deal five months ago. Leeds have not lost at home in all competitions since March, with eight league games unbeaten there, their longest such run since December 2001. It was Calvert-Lewin's seventh goal in his last seven matches at Elland Road and his fourth in seven league games this season. Leeds are seventh on 10 points, three above United in 13th. United host Bournemouth on Sunday at 14:00, and Leeds are at Sunderland at 16:30.

Noni Madueke's deflected shot in the 80th minute gives Arsenal a sixth league win in seven games

Arsenal won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest, with Noni Madueke scoring in the 80th minute, a deflected shot, after coming on at half-time.

Neither side managed a shot on target in the first half, which has happened in only one other Premier League game this season: Aston Villa against Arsenal on 31 August, which Arsenal won 1-0 through Bukayo Saka. Eberechi Eze, given his first league start of the season, was replaced by Madueke at the interval, and Forest made the better start to the second half.

Madueke's shot deflected off Daniel Muñoz and went in, and it was Arsenal's first shot on target of the game. Forest had 14 shots to nine, two on target to one, and Arsenal had 73.7 per cent of the ball and Forest eight corners to six.

Forest are still waiting for a first home league win this season and have not scored in four league games at the City Ground. They have one league win, 2-1 at Aston Villa. Arsenal have won six league games out of seven, losing only at Brighton, and have scored three league goals through substitutes this season; only Ipswich Town, with four, have more. Arsenal are second on 18 points, three behind Manchester City. Forest are 19th on five points, down from 15th. Arsenal host Everton on Saturday at 15:00, and Forest are at Ipswich Town on Friday.

James Maddison scores on his first league start since April 2025 as Tottenham Hotspur win a league game for the first time this season

Tottenham Hotspur won a league game for the first time this season, beating Coventry City 3-1, and James Maddison scored on his first Premier League start since 27 April 2025.

Maddison, who began his career at Coventry, put Tottenham ahead in the 14th minute, hitting the ball first time into the top corner after some good work by Mohammed Kudus. Dominic Solanke had a goal ruled out for offside, because Andy Robertson, who passed to him, had been offside before crossing. Sandro Tonali told Sky Sports at half-time that "one-nil is not enough for us". Coventry equalised in the 49th minute: Jan Paul van Hecke lost possession, Jack Rudoni went down the left, and the ball ran back to him after a shot was blocked and he scored.

Omar Marmoush scored the second in the 58th minute. It was his first goal for Tottenham since he arrived on loan from Manchester City in August, a deal that obliges Spurs to pay £60m to make it permanent when the season ends. Coventry protested, because Marmoush had caught Milan van Ewijk in the face with an elbow before he shot, but the goal stood, the elbow having been judged accidental. Ben Davies, a substitute, scored the third in stoppage time with a low strike from the edge of the box into the corner. Dejan Kulusevski, out since a serious knee injury in the 2-0 home defeat by Crystal Palace on 11 May 2025, came on late for his first appearance since.

Tottenham had 65.4 per cent of the ball, 16 shots to 12, five on target to one, and four corners each. Rudoni's goal was Coventry's only shot on target. It was only the sixth home league win for Tottenham in 37 matches. They had drawn three and lost three of their first six games, and the night brought injuries to the defenders Robertson and Tosin Adarabioyo. Tottenham are 16th on six points, above Coventry on goal difference, up from 19th, and Coventry, who had won their previous two league games, are 17th on six, down from 14th. Tottenham are at Chelsea on Saturday at 17:30, and Coventry host Fulham at 15:00.

The key events on the match page place Ben Davies's goal at 90+6, while the written report calls it the fifth minute of stoppage time; the timeline follows the key events and the prose says only stoppage time.
