Are Brighton a genuine threat at the top of the Premier League?

Football / Opinion: Are Brighton a genuine threat at the top of the Premier League?

Nine league games into the season, Brighton look like a top-four side. I think they are more than a good autumn, and I can show my working, including the number that worries me.

Key numbers
  • 19 pointsthird in the table after nine games
  • +17goal difference, the best in the division
  • 6clean sheets, more than any other side
  • 18thattempt at which Brighton first won away at Manchester City

Eleven minutes in at the Etihad on Saturday, Lewis Dunk, the Brighton captain, swept a free-kick out to his team-mate Diego Gomez. Matheus Nunes, the Manchester City right-back, missed the cross, and the ball reached Yasin Ayari, the Brighton midfielder, who scored the only goal of the afternoon.

Brighton had never won away at City in any competition. They have now, at the 18th attempt.

I have watched plenty of clubs have a good autumn. They score a few, beat someone big, and by March the table has put them back where it thinks they belong. So my first instinct with Brighton was to wait for the correction.

This piece is me refusing to wait. I am going to argue from the numbers that should worry City and Arsenal, and from the ones that should worry Brighton. Are Brighton a genuine threat at the top of the Premier League, or have we all been charmed by nine good games?

What is really being asked

Threat to what, first. Nobody sensible is asking whether Brighton win the league in November. The real question is whether this team will still be in the top four when the clocks go forward, taking points off the big clubs as a matter of course rather than a headline.

And the doubt hides two different claims. One says the results are better than the football: 24 league goals from chances worth 16.94 expected goals, and a defence living on its goalkeeper.

The other says the football is real but the squad is too thin to carry it through a winter with Europe in it. They need different answers, and I will give both.

The case that this is a hot streak with a goalkeeper in form

I want to put the doubter's case properly, because it is a good one and it starts at the Etihad. City had the ball and the chances, with 21 shots to Brighton's seven.

A goalkeeper can win you an afternoon. He cannot win you a season.

They had 63 touches in the Brighton penalty area. Brighton managed nine in City's box all afternoon.

Bart Verbruggen made seven saves, and he was the reason City went home with nothing.

The goal came from a decision I would not want to defend. The Guardian's match report said it came from "what appeared a wrongly awarded free-kick" for a foul on Ayari.

Then, a few minutes before half-time, the ball struck the outstretched arm of Luka Vuskovic, the Brighton defender, inside the area. Referee Craig Pawson gave nothing and the video assistant, John Brooks, backed him.

Keith Hackett, the former head of the referees' body, called it "a deliberate handball" and said a penalty should have been awarded. City's players protested at the time, and on that one I think they have a point.

The gap between goals and chances across the season worries me more. I have seen gaps like that close many times, and nobody gets to choose the month it happens.

Some of those goals will never be repeated. Gomez scored against Crystal Palace from 51.3 metres, and I loved it, but I am not building a title challenge on it.

And I have seen this Brighton story before. In 2024-25 they took 22 points from 12 games, their best top-flight start at the time, and I let myself believe then, too.

Then there is the winter. Gross, who has the most league assists in the squad, had missed less than 60 minutes of football all season when Hurzeler was asked about him in October.

The doubter's case is that this is a bright autumn built on finishing and goalkeeping, and that the club has had bright autumns before.

The case that Brighton are built to last this time

Here is why I do not believe the doubters. The finishing is hot, but the chances are no accident: Brighton have created 35 big chances, more than anybody in the league, and only one side has a higher expected goals figure.

The goals will cool. The chances will not.

The scoring has history behind it, too. Brighton reached 23 league goals after seven games, their most ever at that stage of a season in the top four tiers.

And the goals come from everywhere. Four Brighton players, Ayari, Gross, Jack Hinshelwood and Charalampos Kostoulas, have three league goals each, so there is no single striker for a defence to stop.

The Amex is worse for visitors. Thirteen scored and one conceded in four league games, and nobody has beaten Brighton there. I would not fancy being the side that tries.

People keep telling me this defence is lucky, and I keep pointing them at six clean sheets, the most in the league, five of them in a run of five wins in six. Luck does not shut the door that often.

Arsenal, the reigning champions, lost 3-0 at the Amex in September. It was the third consecutive season that Brighton had beaten the champions at home: City in 2024-25, Liverpool in 2025-26, Arsenal now.

That is not a fluke. That is a habit.

Fabian Hurzeler has 103 games behind him, and by mid-October Leicester City were the only one of 29 opponents he had failed to beat as Brighton boss. When I read that, I stopped calling him the young coach. FK Jablonec have held them to a 0-0 draw in the Conference League since, and that one stung.

What convinces me most is the part that used to sink clubs like Brighton. In the summer they sold the midfielder Carlos Baleba to Manchester United for up to £70m and the centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke to Tottenham for £52m, and the team got better.

This is a club that turned Moises Caicedo, signed for £4million, into a sale worth up to £115m to Chelsea, and Alexis Mac Allister, signed for £6.9million, into up to £55m from Liverpool. Every summer someone tells me this is the summer the selling catches up with them. This autumn they are third.

Hurzeler put it plainly after the Etihad: "Defence wins you tight games. We had a defensive mindset." A coach who can win that way at City and 5-0 against Palace a fortnight earlier has more than one plan.

The case for Brighton is that a club built to sell its best players has learned to get better while it does.

What the headline leaves out

A top-four side that never threatens the title

This is where I think most of the evidence points. City and Arsenal are level on 21 points, and Arsenal have a game in hand. A top-four finish would still beat the sixth place of 2022-23, the best top-flight finish in the club's history.

Europe takes the legs before the league takes the points

The Conference League could decide this more than City can. If Brighton finish the league phase where they sit now, ninth, there are knockout play-offs on 18 and 25 February, and a squad that has already had Brighton's Mats Wieffer and Yankuba Minteh out with knee injuries cannot afford many more Thursdays.

Three routes from here

  1. Route one: the chances keep coming and Brighton are in the race in January

If the attack keeps creating at this rate and the home record holds, Brighton host City on 23 January with something real at stake. For that, Gross has to stay fit and the goals have to keep coming from more than one place.

  2. Route two: the finishing cools and Brighton settle in the top four

The quieter path. The goals slow to what the chances deserve, a few narrow wins become draws, and Brighton spend the spring fighting Chelsea and Liverpool for a Champions League place rather than City and Arsenal for the title.

  3. Route three: Thursdays and injuries drag them back to eighth

That is where gravity pulled in both of Hurzeler's full seasons. If Europe and the treatment room thin the squad and the defence stops outrunning its numbers, it could pull again. I do not expect it, and I would not rule it out.

I started out waiting for Brighton to come back to the pack, and I have ended up checking their fixture list for the dates that matter. Hurzeler was asked in October whether supporters should dream. "They should dream, and we will focus on the game," he said, which is about the best answer a coach in his position can give.

If a club that sells its best players every summer can stay in the top four through a European winter, every club outside the usual elite will have to ask itself why it cannot.
