Forest's Record Fee for Delap Masks a Tidy Chelsea Profit

A striker who found the net only once in the Premier League last season is about to earn Chelsea a tidy profit. Nottingham Forest have agreed a club-record fee worth around £50m for Liam Delap, with the 23-year-old set to undergo a medical and sign a long-term contract at the City Ground this week. Twelve months ago Chelsea paid Ipswich Town £30m for the same player, fending off interest from Manchester United and Everton to get the deal done. Why Chelsea Are Ready to Let Him Go

That lone league goal sums up Delap's difficult year at Stamford Bridge. Shoulder and hamstring problems interrupted his campaign and limited how much impact he could make in attack, prompting Chelsea to put him up for sale this summer. The Blues have since covered that position twice over, bringing in Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg and Danny Welbeck from Brighton. With two new forwards already in the building and Delap barely troubling the scoresheet last term, letting him go for a profit was a straightforward decision.

From Derby's Academy to a Club-Record Fee

Long before the club-record fee, Delap's football education started in Derby County's academy, and Manchester City signed him in 2019. He was part of the City squad that lifted the FA Youth Cup in 2019-20, then found 24 goals from 20 Premier League 2 outings the next season as City claimed that title as well. His first-team bow arrived in September 2020, scoring on his senior debut in a 2-1 League Cup victory over Bournemouth before making his Premier League debut three days later in a 5-2 loss at Leicester. Injury setbacks slowed his progress, and loan spells at Stoke, Preston North End and Hull City in the Championship followed between 2022 and 2024. City then sold him to Ipswich for £20m in summer 2024, and he scored 12 goals in 37 Premier League matches for a club playing its first season back in the top flight.

Across his Premier League career Delap has scored 13 goals in 67 appearances, with 12 of those coming in 37 games during his single season at Ipswich. That leaves just one Premier League goal from the rest of his top-flight career, spread across his time at Manchester City and Chelsea - the scarcity behind the west London club's willingness to cash in a year after signing him.

Forest's Summer Ledger

Delap joins a Forest squad already remodelled this summer. The club has added defender Ousmane Diomande from Sporting for £34m, plus free-transfer arrivals Xaver Schlager and goalkeeper Steve Benda, while recouping a club-record £116m from Manchester City for Elliot Anderson and £9m from Coventry City for Taiwo Awoniyi.

Diomande's arrival was about shoring up the back line; Delap is aimed squarely at the opposite problem, with goals hard to come by. At close to £50m he would be the priciest name of Forest's summer, eclipsing the £34m spent on Diomande - proof that a centre-forward's price tag rarely tracks his recent scoring record.

It isn't hard to see why the move has urgency. Neither Chris Wood nor Igor Jesus could find the net as Forest lost 1-0 to Leeds in their opening home league fixture at the weekend, and Delap - once his medical is signed off - would give the squad fresh competition up top.

Justifying a price tag some £20m above what Chelsea paid for him will come down to the consistent playing time he struggled to get at Stamford Bridge. Having already pocketed a club-record sale this summer, Forest are betting that the missing ingredient was minutes on the pitch, not talent.
