How the game unfolded
Both goals came from the penalty spot: Rogers scored for Chelsea in the 40th minute and Gakpo levelled for Liverpool in the 43rd, and neither side broke the deadlock again, sending the tie to a shoot-out that Liverpool won 6-5.
The match stayed close throughout. Liverpool had 52 per cent of possession to Chelsea's 48, 10 shots to 11, and 4 shots on target each. Chelsea completed 334 of 422 passes at 79.1 per cent accuracy to Liverpool's 347 of 441 at 78.7 per cent, figures close enough that neither side's passing game stood out from the other's.
Chelsea had the better of the physical exchanges: 15 tackles to Liverpool's 12, 12 of them won to 6, 32 clearances to 15, and 53 duels won to 37, including 20 of the aerial duels to Liverpool's 11. Liverpool sent in more crosses, 21 to 12, and won more corners, 7 to 5, without turning the extra service into a shooting advantage.
Xabi Alonso made four substitutions, three of them together in the 68th minute: Barco, Emegha and Palestra, with Colwill already on at half-time. Andoni Iraola made five, Barcola and Wirtz on together in the 59th, Jacquet in the 72nd, and Mac Allister and Isak either side of the 81st and 82nd minutes. Two players were booked on each side: Koumas and McConnell for Liverpool, Acheampong and Lavia for Chelsea.
Darren England was the referee at Anfield. Before this game Liverpool had won four of their five listed matches and lost one, 0-3 at home to Manchester City, while Chelsea had won two of their five, drawn one and lost two, including a 0-3 defeat away at Brentford.
