Premier League Round-Up: Ten-Man City Take the Derby, Leeds Take Newcastle Apart

Nottingham Forest won at Villa Park for the first time in 32 years, and Oliver Glasner has a first win as their head coach.

Liam Delap opened the scoring straight after the interval, his first goal since January and his first for Forest after a £50m summer move from Chelsea. Alysson levelled on 74 for Aston Villa's first Premier League goal of the season. Igor Jesus, a substitute, stabbed in the winner with two minutes left.

The shot count reads 22 to seven in Forest's favour and describes the game accurately. Villa's best moment came early, when Victor Lindelof's strike deflected off Murillo and Matz Sels turned it on to the post, and when Murillo cleared it straight back to Lindelof the goalkeeper blocked him too. Unai Emery took off Nicolas Jackson, a £65m club record signing, at half-time and brought on Tammy Abraham, a player he was willing to sell in the summer. That substitution says more about where this rebuild is than any league position does.

Emery has now faced Glasner eight times since February 2024 and not beaten him once. Villa have one point and one goal from four matches. Forest have drawn with Liverpool and Tottenham and beaten Villa, and their head coach has something to build on.

Bournemouth have led in every league game they have played this season and won none of them, and no side in Premier League history had previously managed that across an opening four.

Kevin Schade headed Brentford in front on 34 from Yehor Yarmoliuk's cross, after Adrien Truffert gave the ball away cheaply in the final third. Justin Kluivert equalised four minutes later from a loose ball in the box. Marcus Tavernier put the Cherries ahead seven minutes into the second half, Evanilson controlling Antonio Silva's lofted pass and teeing him up to finish beyond Caoimhin Kelleher. Four minutes after that, Djordje Petrovic passed the ball straight to Schade, who lobbed him.

Marco Rose is still waiting for a first Premier League win as Bournemouth head coach. His side had 20 shots to Brentford's eight and ten on target to their two, and Ben Gannon-Doak's deflected effort hit the woodwork in the dying seconds. Brentford were convinced they should have had a first-half penalty when Kristoffer Ajer's shot struck Truffert's arm; the referee Jarred Gillett judged the defender too close to react.

Keith Andrews has three draws and a win from four and a team that has now surrendered a lead in three consecutive matches. Brentford have not lost to Bournemouth in 12 meetings since 2014. Bournemouth's attention turns to Real Sociedad and their Europa League debut on Thursday.

Hull City arrived at Stamford Bridge without having conceded a Premier League goal all season and led at half-time anyway.

Morgan Rogers, Chelsea's £117m club record signing from Aston Villa, ended the clean sheet on seven minutes, shifting the ball past Matt Crooks and firing left-footed beyond Konstantinos Tzolakis. Then Jorrel Hato switched off and Mohamed Belloumi volleyed in Ryan Giles' cross on 28. Six minutes later Semi Ajayi headed against the crossbar, Oli McBurnie reacted quickest to divert the rebound into Belloumi's path, and his shot went in via deflections off Levi Colwill and Reece James.

Joao Pedro smashed a left-footed equaliser inside the near post from Cole Palmer's low cross on 66, and Chelsea, who had 68% of the ball and 11 corners, could not find the winner. Xabi Alonso's side have scored ten goals in four matches and conceded nine. They have now gone 20 Premier League matches without a clean sheet, a run that reaches back to January, and have conceded at least twice in every game against Premier League opposition since he took charge. Buying Emi Martinez from Aston Villa for £7.5m has not fixed that on its own.

Hull are unbeaten in four, with wins over Manchester United and Coventry City and draws with Aston Villa and Chelsea, which is not the season most people wrote for them in August. Their supporters sang that they were going to win the league. Their only loss on the day was Nobel Mendy, who came off worse in a clash of heads with Joao Pedro.

Leif Davis put the ball into his own net's general direction inside 14 minutes and finished the afternoon with a goal, an assist and three points.

Daichi Kamada found Anan Khalaili in space on the right, and the Palace man's effort, which could have been a shot or a cross, took a deflection off Davis and settled in the bottom corner past Kjell Scherpen. Davis answered it himself: a wicked cross on 23 for Emersonn to power a header past Walter Benitez, then, on the stroke of half-time, a run into the box to head in after Emersonn had shouldered the ball into his path. The 26-year-old has already matched the three goal involvements he managed across the whole of his previous Premier League season.

Palace made it harder still on 34 when Axel Disasi caught Jack Clarke with a late, high foot to the shin and was sent off. Ten men stopped creating for a long stretch, then Jorgen Strand Larsen got the better of Issa Diop and rifled in an equaliser on 75. Zian Flemming, on his first goal for Ipswich, settled it at the death.

Pierre Sage has lost three of his first four matches and conceded at least twice in each. Palace have taken 11 points at home in 2026, and of the ever-present Premier League sides only Tottenham have taken fewer, and the Holmesdale Fanatics have stopped their activity in the ground over how clubs treat supporters, which does not help the noise. Gary O'Neil, meanwhile, has Ipswich halfway to matching the four wins they managed across the whole of 2024-25.

Less than 72 hours after beating Atletico Madrid, Liverpool could not beat a Fulham side who had lost their first three league games.

Andoni Iraola changed three, bringing in Kostas Tsimikas, Ryan Gravenberch and Victor Munoz, and watched his team look nothing like the one Anfield had seen on Wednesday. Fulham should have led early, Jeremy Jacquet clearing Gonzalo Garcia's effort off the line after a mix-up between Alisson and Gravenberch that was entirely Liverpool's own doing. Josh King forced a save. Antonee Robinson headed wide.

Bernd Leno did the rest, keeping out Munoz's header, an Alexander Isak effort and a powerful Dominik Szoboszlai strike. Bradley Barcola, making his first Premier League start for Liverpool, had a volley deflected behind. Isak headed wide from an injury-time corner. Fulham had more touches in the opposition box, 24 to 18, than the home side.

Alvaro Arbeloa played 98 games for Liverpool between 2007 and 2009 and is now the first former Liverpool Premier League player to take a point off them as a manager, after Paul Ince, Mauricio Pellegrino and Steven Gerrard failed. David Affengruber was excellent on debut. Liverpool have six points from four and have dropped four more at Anfield, where, counting the end of last season, they have now drawn four league games in a row.

Tottenham Hotspur have played four Premier League matches and more than 400 minutes this season without scoring a goal.

Their best chance came in the fifth minute, when Jan Paul van Hecke volleyed Andy Robertson's wide free-kick over at the back post. After that, a home crowd that had watched £302m arrive in the summer grew restless while its forwards declined to shoot. A tame effort from Mateus Fernandes, saved easily by Jordan Pickford two minutes into the second half, was greeted with ironic cheers. James Maddison came on late, back from a shoulder injury, and found nothing either.

Everton were marginally the better team and might have won it. Thierno Barry's close-range header on 50 was blocked by the face of Antonin Kinsky. Fifteen minutes later Kinsky gave the ball away to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall with a sloppy pass and had to block the finish with his leg. Brennan Johnson, whose goal won Spurs the Europa League in 2025, hammered a Dewsbury-Hall cut-back over from the other side of the argument.

David Moyes gave Ainsley Maitland-Niles a first Everton start and brought Jack Grealish off the bench, back on loan from Manchester City. Everton are unbeaten. Roberto de Zerbi's Spurs were booed by some of their own at the final whistle, after the first goalless draw in the history of their stadium, and their league start is statistically their worst since 2008-09.

Arsenal won at the Stadium of Light without playing well, and their manager spent the evening talking about a penalty they did not concede.

On 55 minutes Ezri Konsa was penalised for pulling down Dan Ballard, and David Raya read Enzo Le Fee's spot kick and saved low to his left. What that save was worth became clear 121 seconds later, when Bruno Guimaraes, brought on at half-time, curled in off the bar from 20 yards. It was the summer signing's first Arsenal goal, and it came against the club Newcastle supporters like least. Bukayo Saka added a penalty in the final seconds after Reinildo Mandava fouled him and was sent off for a second yellow.

Mikel Arteta's verdict on the penalty decision was not a hedge. "It's a judo roll from the opponent. Ezri does nothing," he told Match of the Day. He had already told TNT Sport: "The 27 years I've been in football, it's not a penalty in any case, in any context, at any level, in any league." Arsenal had 66% of the ball in the first half and very little to show for it. Kai Havertz put one over from six yards and had a volley tipped over by Robin Roefs. Ballard cleared a Havertz effort off the line. Jurrien Timber's header was ruled out for offside.

Sunderland have four points from four games and a case for more. Granit Xhaka, against his former club, leads every Sunderland player this season for touches, chances created, passes into the box, fouls won and completed passes. It has not moved a record of one win in 30 Premier League meetings with Arsenal, and Sunderland are winless in the last 18 of them. Regis Le Bris was plain about it: "We were close this evening, it wasn't enough." On Wednesday they host AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League, their first European match in 53 years.

Coventry City have played four Premier League matches, scored no goals and taken no points, and only Crystal Palace in 2017-18 have started a Premier League season that way.

It is also the first time in Coventry's history that they have gone four league games at the start of a season without a goal or a point, and only in 1919-20, their first league campaign, have they lost each of the first four. Brighton were the better side and the scoreline still flatters nobody. Charalampos Kostoulas turned and headed the ball down between two defenders on 35 minutes and bounced his finish beyond Carl Rushworth. Coventry had weathered the opening and had a spell on top, and the BBC report is blunt about it: they should have scored at least one of their eight chances.

The second half removed the argument. Malick Yalcouye headed the ball down, ran on to it and slotted into the bottom corner on 51. Two minutes later Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off for a flailing elbow on Maxim de Cuyper. Bobby Thomas brought down Kostoulas in the box on 70 and Pascal Gross scored the penalty, Lewis Dunk hit an emphatic 20-yard finish on 83, and Yasin Ayari rifled in a fifth in stoppage time. Brighton have the best goal difference in the division.

The Coventry supporters stayed on their feet and applauded a team being beaten 5-0 at home, which Frank Lampard noticed. "It means they are with the group," he said. "We're not stupid, we understand the jump [from the Championship] and the fact that we did so well last season." He had also made the point that his side's opening month contained trips to Arsenal and Manchester City. The fixtures get kinder. The goal has to come first.

Manchester City played more than 70 minutes of a Manchester derby with ten men and won it anyway, which is the part of Sunday afternoon nobody will be arguing about on Monday.

Phil Foden went on 23 minutes. He was sitting on the ground when his studs caught Bruno Fernandes in the chest, and Fernandes, a moment earlier, had appeared to kick him in the back while he was down there. Foden became only the second Manchester City player sent off in a Premier League Manchester derby, after Bernardo Corradi in December 2006. Enzo Maresca, managing City in a derby for the first time since Pep Guardiola left, did not dispute it. "I think it was a red card [for Phil Foden] to be honest," he said, "but also in the same action for [Manchester United's] Bruno, not just for us."

United then had the ball, the extra man and the post twice, once either side of half-time. Their other clear sight of it came at the very end, when Bruno Fernandes found Bryan Mbeumo in the area and Gianluigi Donnarumma palmed his shot behind. City scored on the break in the 60th minute, Erling Haaland tapping in Josko Gvardiol's low deflected cross at the back post. The flag went up immediately. The video assistant referee check that followed was long, and it decided two things: that Haaland had been played onside by Patrick Dorgu's outstretched toe, and that Enzo Fernandez, who was clearly offside, had not affected play when he threw himself at the cross with a diving header before it reached the scorer. BBC Sport's own analysis of the incident concludes otherwise: the ball ran a yard in front of Lisandro Martinez, the test is whether Fernandez's dive for it changed what Martinez did next, and the referee should have been sent to the monitor. It goes down there as a mistake by the VAR.

Michael Carrick was measured about the result and not about the process. "I'm staggered and a little bit worried and concerned that if that's how it's interpreted we are in a bit of bother," he said. United had 16 shots to City's six and three of them on target. Haaland, who watched most of that from the far end, was cheerfully unbothered: "I didn't touch the ball for the first 20 minutes, but why would I, I had nothing to do." City are level on points with Arsenal at the top. United have dropped points in three of their four matches and are eight points behind their neighbours already.

Newcastle United arrived at Elland Road on Monday night and lost the match in fourteen minutes.

Leeds took the lead on 32 when Ao Tanaka's strike took a double deflection off Sean Steur and Lewis Miley and looped into the bottom corner, credited to Miley as an own goal. Two minutes and 42 seconds later Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had headed the second, but the final touch came off the top of Jayden Bogle's head. On the stroke of half-time Calvert-Lewin got the goal he wanted, a composed finish across Lukas Hornicek that took his career tally against Newcastle to eight. Noah Okafor added the fourth on 59.

Daniel Farke found something to complain about anyway. Bazoumana Toure scored a consolation for Newcastle in the 90th minute and the winning manager called it a nightmare. "Even in a perfect performance there's always something to moan about, this was definitely one of the rare points I have to criticise," he said, before describing Calvert-Lewin as one of the standout strikers in the league. Leeds are third on eight points, four behind Arsenal. Only Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Bournemouth have won more Premier League points in the calendar year 2026 than Leeds have.

Matthias Jaissle did not hide behind the squad he has. Jacob Ramsey felt his thigh in the warm-up, Anthony Elanga was not in the matchday squad and is going for an MRI, and an 18-year-old in Steur was asked to replace Nico Gonzalez in midfield. "In the Premier League you need to bring the fundamentals on to the pitch, the physicality," Jaissle said. "If the opponent is showing that and if you can't match this physicality then it's going to be difficult and that's something we learned today." Newcastle play again on Saturday.
