Premier League match reviews: 31 October 2026 to 2 November 2026

Kai Havertz's goal at Anfield on Sunday gave Arsenal a three-point lead in the Premier League, the day after Manchester City lost at home to Brighton & Hove Albion. City had been top on goal difference before the round, level with Arsenal on 21 points; they now trail by three. All twenty clubs played across three days, eight games on Saturday, one on Sunday and Everton's win at Newcastle United on Monday night.

Twenty-one goals went in across the ten games, with five home wins, three away wins and two draws. Two were own goals, by Nottingham Forest's Nikola Milenković and Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Four players were sent off: Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta with a straight red, and Manchester United's Lisandro Martínez, Sunderland's Omar Alderete and Newcastle United's Jacob Ramsey for second bookings.

Positions before the round are from the table dated 26 October, after the previous Premier League round; every club has now played nine games.

Liverpool0-1Arsenal

Arsenal's Kai Havertz scores in the 16th minute for a 1-0 win at Liverpool, who take 17 shots without one on target

Arsenal won 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday and opened a three-point lead, a day after Manchester City had lost at home. Arsenal had not won a Premier League game at Anfield since 2012. Liverpool had 56 per cent of the ball and 17 shots to Arsenal's 10, yet not one of the 17 was on target. Arsenal put three on target.

The goal came in the 16th minute. Arsenal's Declan Rice played the ball across goal and his team-mate Kai Havertz turned it in at the far post. Liverpool spent the rest of the half at the Arsenal door: Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya reached a flick-on from Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk just before Liverpool's Alexander Isak could get to it, two Liverpool penalty appeals were turned down, and Liverpool's Florian Wirtz hit the crossbar with a free-kick.

The second half was quieter around Raya. Arsenal sent on Myles Lewis-Skelly and pushed up the pitch late on, and only a one-handed save from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson kept out Arsenal's Christos Tzolis. Arsenal had been knocked out of the League Cup in midweek by Fleetwood Town of League Two; this was the reply, delivered with a clean sheet.

Arsenal now have 24 points from nine games, three more than Manchester City. Andoni Iraola's Liverpool are fifth on 15, nine behind, having dropped one place on the weekend.

Manchester City0-1Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton & Hove Albion's Yasin Ayari scores in the 11th minute and Brighton hold on to win 1-0 at Manchester City, who have 21 shots

Brighton & Hove Albion won 1-0 at the Etihad on Saturday, after Manchester City had knocked them out of the League Cup on penalties at the same ground on Wednesday. Brighton had never won a league game there in 16 previous visits. City had 62 per cent of the ball, 21 shots to seven and six on target to three, and it was City's first league game without a goal in 25 matches.

The goal arrived in the 11th minute and City made it. Brighton's Maxim De Cuyper crossed towards the far post, City right-back Matheus Nunes miscued his clearance, and Brighton's Yasin Ayari scored from close range. City's Iliman Ndiaye headed wide from a cross by his team-mate Elliot Anderson soon after and was City's most dangerous player.

Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen did the rest. He tipped a Ndiaye shot on to the crossbar in the second half and made another strong save from Nunes, while a header from City's Erling Haaland gave him little trouble. Brighton could have added to the lead: De Cuyper blazed over from 10 yards and forced City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma into a save with a header.

Enzo Maresca won his first seven league games as City manager. City have now lost two league games in a row, at Aston Villa and at home to Brighton, and sit second on 21 points. Fabian Hürzeler's Brighton are third on 19, two points behind them, and their 24 league goals are the most in the division.

Chelsea2-0Manchester United

Chelsea's Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer, from the penalty spot, score in a 2-0 home win over Manchester United, who have Lisandro Martínez sent off

Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, both goals coming in the second half, in the 50th and 64th minutes. Chelsea had 19 shots to 12 and 10 on target to five. Manchester United finished with 10 men and lost a third match in a row.

Manchester United had the better of the first half. Manchester United's Matheus Cunha had a header disallowed for offside after a VAR check, his team-mate Bruno Fernandes put a good chance over, and Manchester United's Amad Diallo twice had only Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders to beat and did not score. Chelsea, booed by some at Stamford Bridge at the interval, had offered little.

Five minutes after the break, Chelsea's Romeo Lavia won the ball near halfway and passed to his team-mate Morgan Rogers, who ran through the middle untouched and chipped in from seven yards. Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez was booked for repeated fouls on Rogers, then shown a second yellow card when the VAR spotted him pushing Chelsea's Wesley Fofana in the face at a corner. Chelsea's Cole Palmer scored the penalty in the 64th minute. Chelsea's Estêvão had a third ruled out for offside, and Manchester United's Bryan Mbeumo hit the bar in stoppage time.

Xabi Alonso's Chelsea are fourth on 16 points. Michael Carrick's Manchester United are 17th on seven, winless in nine in all competitions, level on points with Crystal Palace in 18th.

Bournemouth2-0Leeds United

Bournemouth's Evanilson and Amine Adli score in a 2-0 home win over Leeds United

Bournemouth beat Leeds United 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday, a sixth straight win across all competitions and a sixth clean sheet in a row. Leeds had 56 per cent of the ball and 10 shots to 11, but only one of theirs was on target against Bournemouth's five.

Leeds thought they had scored inside 11 minutes, when Dominic Calvert-Lewin bundled in a cross from his Leeds team-mate James Justin, but a long VAR check found the ball had come off his hand. Leeds' Harry Wilson then dragged a shot just wide. Bournemouth's goal in the 31st minute was a gift: Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford, taking a short pass from a goal-kick, left his team-mate Ao Tanaka short with his pass, and Bournemouth's Justin Kluivert intercepted and squared for Evanilson to score. It was Evanilson's fifth goal of the season and his fourth in four league games.

The closest either side came in the second half, until the very end, was a low free-kick from Bournemouth's Marcus Tavernier that Trafford saved. In the 94th minute two Bournemouth substitutes settled it, Junior Kroupi slipping in Amine Adli to finish from close range. Marco Rose's Bournemouth rise from 13th to eighth on 12 points. Daniel Farke's Leeds, without a league win in four before this game, drop from seventh to 12th on 11.

Brentford2-0Nottingham Forest

Brentford beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 through an own goal by Forest's Nikola Milenković and a late goal from Brentford's Igor Thiago

Brentford beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 at home on Saturday, their first win in five games. Forest had 58.5 per cent of the ball and 15 shots to seven, yet each side managed one shot on target, and Brentford's went in.

Brentford led on the half-hour without a shot on target of their own. Brentford winger Dango Ouattara skipped past Forest's Murillo on the right and drilled the ball across the six-yard box, and Forest's Nikola Milenković, trying to block it, looped it over Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels. Brentford captain Mathias Jensen hit the crossbar with a free-kick before half-time, and Forest substitute Ryan Yates headed over early in the second half.

Brentford's second came from a counter-attack in the 76th minute. Brentford substitute Jaidon Anthony carried the ball forward and squared it for Brentford's Igor Thiago, whose shot was the first on target by either side. Thiago had scored at Sunderland in the League Cup in midweek as well. Keith Andrews' Brentford stay sixth, now on 14 points. Oliver Glasner's Forest are 19th on six and have scored six league goals, the fewest in the division.

Coventry City3-1Sunderland

Coventry City beat Sunderland 3-1 at home, with goals from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni; Sunderland's Omar Alderete is sent off

Coventry City beat Sunderland 3-1 at home on Saturday and climbed out of the bottom three. The two clubs started the day 19th and 20th with six league goals each. Coventry scored three from four shots on target; Sunderland had 57 per cent of the ball and 17 shots, two of them on target.

Coventry manager Frank Lampard made four changes, leaving his captain Matt Grimes on the bench and starting Taiwo Awoniyi for the first time since his red card on 13 September, when Brighton & Hove Albion beat Coventry 5-0. Coventry's Tatsuhiro Sakamoto opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a fine finish from the edge of the box, after Sunderland had failed to clear a simple cross. Awoniyi robbed Sunderland's Luke O'Nien in the 37th minute and scored with the help of a deflection, and Coventry's Jack Rudoni made it three in the 52nd, his shot deflecting in off Sunderland's Omar Alderete.

Sunderland's Enzo Le Fée scored a 67th-minute penalty after a long review by referee Simon Hooper found that Coventry defender Ethan Pinnock had handled. Alderete then picked up a second yellow card in stoppage time, for tripping Rudoni, and misses Sunderland's next game, at home to Chelsea. Coventry rise from 19th to 16th on nine points. Régis Le Bris's Sunderland are bottom on five, with six defeats from nine and 17 goals conceded.

Hull City2-2Ipswich Town

Hull City and Ipswich Town draw 2-2, Ipswich's Julio Enciso equalising after Hull had come from behind

Hull City and Ipswich Town drew 2-2 at the MKM Stadium on Saturday. Ipswich dominated the first half and Hull were the better side after it. Ipswich had 61 per cent of the ball and 15 shots to nine; each side had three on target.

Ipswich's Abdoul Ouattara beat his man and slipped in his team-mate Florentino, who struck hard at the near post in the 22nd minute. Ipswich's Julio Enciso then headed in from a corner, but the goal was disallowed for an earlier foul on Hull's Oli McBurnie. Hull were level in the 58th minute, McBurnie finding Tim Iroegbunam, who broke the offside line and walked into the box unchallenged to score his first Premier League goal. In the 68th minute McBurnie put Hull ahead with a low free-kick into the bottom corner past Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton.

The lead lasted six minutes. Enciso hit a left-foot shot from 20 yards into the top corner in the 74th minute. Sergej Jakirovic's Hull have gone seven league games without a win and are 11th on 11 points; Gary O'Neil's Ipswich are 14th, also on 11; Hull's goal difference is plus one and Ipswich's minus four.

Tottenham Hotspur beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at home after Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta is sent off in the 13th minute

Tottenham Hotspur beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at home on Saturday for a third straight league win. Palace lost their striker Jean-Philippe Mateta to a red card in the 13th minute and Spurs had 79 per cent of the ball, 34 shots to two and 19 corners to none.

Mateta was sent off after referee Michael Oliver went to the pitchside monitor to look at a lunge on Spurs defender Micky van de Ven. In the 25th minute Palace left Spurs' Archie Gray unmarked at a corner from his Spurs team-mate Mohammed Kudus, and Gray headed in. After the break Spurs' Dominic Solanke made a block to stop Palace's Dwight McNeil from levelling.

The second goal came in the 73rd minute. Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson turned a header from Spurs defender Jan Paul van Hecke on to the bar, and van Hecke, still on the ground, headed the rebound in. Henderson made several more saves late on. Roberto De Zerbi's Spurs climb from 14th to ninth on 12 points. Pierre Sage's Palace, with two league wins from nine, are 18th on seven.

Aston Villa and Fulham draw 1-1, Villa's Nicolas Jackson scoring before Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki drops a corner into his own net

Aston Villa and Fulham drew 1-1 at Villa Park on Saturday evening, the last of Saturday's eight games, played that evening rather than on Sunday because Villa play Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday. Villa had 16 shots to 14 and 45 per cent of the ball; Fulham had five shots on target to Villa's three.

Villa had the chance to lead in the first half. Referee Sam Barrott was sent to the monitor by the VAR and gave a penalty for a handball by Fulham's Sander Berge from a header by Villa's Leon Goretzka, but Villa captain John McGinn hit the crossbar. Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki made a one-handed save from Fulham's Oscar Bobb. In the 39th minute Villa's Nicolas Jackson ran on to a pass from his team-mate Johan Manzambi, rode two challenges and slotted past Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Suzuki undid his own good work in the 64th minute, failing to hold an inswinging corner from Fulham's Alex Iwobi and fumbling it over his line. He saved from Fulham's Antonee Robinson later on, and Villa defender Pau Torres missed the target with two close-range headers. Villa manager Unai Emery defended his goalkeeper after the match: "This is part of football." Villa are tenth on 12 points; Álvaro Arbeloa's Fulham are 15th on nine.
